Why would it not have HDR on iTunes?

I would bet maybe Superman II theatrical will be released, but that will be it for a while.

I don't think the Donner cut will be arriving anytime soon. It's sort of like the Star Trek: The Motion Picture DC... it was cut, assembled, and SFX'd at home video resolutions of the time.

It would take a re-do at a theatrical grade level. Money I doubt the studios would want to part with if they can help it.

I got my UHD BD of Superman The Movie last Thursday and despite not being impressed at first, I stopped the disc playing and popped in the BD which is the old edition I already have on the Superman set and there's improvement.
What I noticed the most is color,on the UHD BD color looks more natural (logical, 10 bit color Vs. 8 bit color) while the BD looks more caryon-like, and surprisingly the UHD BD has some interesting specular highlights, like how Krypton's Sun looks, the shiny-silver suits of the Kryptonians, the explosion of Krypton's Sun and of course the start credits.
I don't like the Atmos track played as 5.1, I prefer the "ancient" original 5.1 mix despite being on lossy Dolby Digital 5.1, they could have at least used Dolby Digital Plus.

Dolby Digital 5.1 on Blu-ray is the same bitrate as Dolby Digital Plus, which is 640 kbps. The name and bitrate of: Dolby Digital Plus was mainly created and used on HD-DVDs by Dolby Lab. Since HD-DVD is now defunct, Dolby Digital Plus aka Dolby Digital 5.1 is carried onto Blu-ray.

I saw the Donner cut in San Antonio in 2001 or 2002 before the eventual DVD release when Warners was toying with a nationwide theatrical re-release (well, New Braunfels, how in the hell that movie was tested in New Braunfels is a mystery, but there you go, the theater has since been torn down)...the hellzapoppin 5.1 mix for the surround tracks was fun, and I appreciated the new footage, especially Jor-El warning his son about arrogance, which is exactly what almost kills Superman ("I'll mold this box into your prison bars....DOH!!!"). The original Blu of the Donner cut remains my go-to for experiencing the 1978 Superman release.

And in off-topic news, the La-La-Land/Intrada CD box of the Star Trek: Motion Picture soundtrack still hasn't shipped. Grrr.

Still haven't got my Supes CD yet. The lads at Intrada told me that the supplier had to change replicators and that they were expecting something in early May, now we're a day away from June. Hmmmmm.

I was about to ask how the soundtrack sounded. Good thing I didn't. I'm still looking to get The X-Files soundtracks.

You have to understand that WB had to be guarded about the release of the Donner cut because it boke the contract deal between them and the film's Producers, the Salkinds. The original deal left the Salkinds with the legal right to a final cut of the film It was the Salkinds that also made the TV cut as well.
Ilya Salkind sued WB over the Donner cut and won. Ilya however could have stopped it from ever being seen, it was within his right - however, all he wanted was to be part of it so he allowed it to be limitedly released theatrical (as WB wanted), and let it be released to home video. Ilya had approached WB several time in the past for a re-edit and even spoke to Donner about, but Donner ignored him and went on anyway.

I saw that test release, too. I do prefer the original theatrical cut, but I'm glad I was able to see that version on the big screen.

But I think FilmFreakosaurus was talking about the Donner Cut of II, which I'm pretty sure only lives at HD resolution. A 4K release of that would have to be either upscaled or reconstructed.

35mm film only available at 1080p which is a mere 10% of its original resolution?

In what universe?

It'll be worth the wait

Last days of La La Lands 25% off sale BTW. They're out of stock on Superman now, but you can still order a GC at 25% off and order it when it comes back in stock later.

Same bitrate yes, same codec and algorithms no. Dolby Digital Plus is superior to regular DD at the same bitrates.
