After watching it last night; the colors are less accurate than in Black Panther but the audio is.
For the sheer artistic palette of stylized colors and penetrating audio and coolness factor of the actors inside their trench coats and the new new Matrix in Atmos 4K...it's a must add to your collection. There is simply no two ways about it.

You can analyze all you want with eagle eyes and Mickey mouse's ears, @ the end of the tunnel this new Matrix beats the hell out of the latest Marvel flicks and last Star Wars. This is Sparta man, bring the rest including 300 and a dame to kill for.

Default Too Grainy

I watched this last night on my LG C7/Xbox One - gotta say some of this looked amazing but other scenes were soo grainy I was embarrassed. The opening scene with Trinity is full of grain especially the cops flash lights. There was also a ton of grain in the interrogation scene with the Smiths. The white walls are so grainy as is Neo's face. Disappointing. Hard to believe this got a 5 star review for 4k.

Yeah, the professionals I know are pretty certain those were the times it took back in 2008. Looking over at my calendar, it's 2018 now.

Average bitrate isn't everything.
Well, that settles it. Clearly we can stop buying Blu-rays and just settle for bit-starved streaming content. Thank you for clearing this up and saving me hundreds of dollars.

Okay, so they have 200 machines. They can encode either 200 different films, or 100 films twice.

The problem doesn't go away.
And yet, it's not actually a problem because economies of scale take over. It's not like it's being encoded every time they press a disc. Just enough times to cover the various regional requirements/necessities. And for many regions, I suspect the same video encode can be reused, as the audio tracks are likely very similar in size/quantity.

I'm fairly sure "because we can" is the primary reason for most storage space increases.
Clearly unfamiliar with the phrase "necessity is the mother of invention".

I'm not advocating anything, I'm explaining why different encodes for different regions makes absolutely no business sense.
It's literally such a small cost, it really doesn't make business sense, especially when your business is allegedly providing the highest quality version of something.

My biggest problem with this remaster is it still tells the story through moving images accompanied by sound. I'd rather a remaster that told the story through written words, maybe printed on paper over a series of pages all bound together. You could still do chapters and things, you'd just have to manually find chapters by which page they're on, maybe with some sort of index of chapters at the start?

And we're encoding UHD instead of BD.

There are plenty of examples of lower-bitrate content that's encoded better than higher-bitrate content. It's about how you use the bits as much as it's about how many of them you have. Throwing extra bitrate at the black-on-white stationary end credits would be a total waste, for example.

You know what's even easier? Only encoding each movie once.

Well if there's a phrase, it must be universally true then.

It would be thousands of dollars, I would imagine. And no, it makes no business sense because 99% of your audience won't notice the negligible upgrade and 50% of the 1% who do live in the region that's getting the lower-bitrate encode and are going to be pissed. Probably 90% of those - especially with UHD being region-free - will import the better version and now you're basically making a cheapo English-only release at a higher cost.

Black Panther is a color festival, a fireworks, a clarity of cardboard backgrounds.
It's a humorous way of saying, in my own words.

The Matrix they can redo it 5 billion times with different color grading; Irish green, avocado green, teal, turquoise, blue, purple, violet, John Wick red, Atomic Blonde yellow, ...it's a stylized sci-fi without borders.

In real life, say in New York City, Black Panther's color palette is more accurate, on a clear day, night, in a studio, with green screens, in Africa?

The Matrix is inside the data of a program, in the zone. ...With bitcoins and hackers from Russia and Korea and China and Pakistan and India and Iran and Iraq and Syria and the other four corners of our computers.

In that sense that I meant Black Panther has a more accurate earth color palette, like a rainbow from the wizard of oz. Just a figure of speech in films.

Even after reading all the glowing praise in this thread, the one thing that has made me the most excited is seeing people complaining about it being too grainy on this page. Can’t wait for my order to arrive!

Don't you mean, "Looks like it was shot on film and intended to be exhibited on film projectors with low peak brightness and limited dynamic range"?

Conversion to HDR can certainly exacerbate grain definition far beyond what appears naturally on film and what would have been seen theatrically back in 1999. I don't know if this is what's occurring with this disc (I don't have it yet), but complaints about graininess aren't mutually exclusive with liking natural film grain.

I just wish I wasn't stuck at work all day so I could watch it. UPS dropped it off (in a flimsy padded envelope with a crushed slipcover of course) this morning before I left. Going to swap this into a three-disc case with a swing tray, watch the movie, and worry about the slipcover later.
