I just watched it as and gotta say wow I'm really loving this disc. One of my top 5 films of all time and I'm so glad its finally in the collection. I did get that weird teal image that people have posted. Audio is amazing and the picture looked fantastic with beautiful grain kept in tact. I'll have to rewatch in HDR10 since the DV issue actually annoyed me with so many blacks that were dark grey with the the fade to black scenes or even the black bars. Then I'll probably watch in DV when they finally fix this mess lol.

Anyone who has invested in a high-end 4k system, and who actually has the balls, ignorance, and righteousness to complain about GRAIN, of all heaven-sent things, should be taken out and SHOT!

People like that are why the rest of us suffer DNR madness and its resolution-defeating end.

I'm ticked pink that we've got some filmic grain in THE MATRIX UHD and bend over backwards to thank WB for leaving it in, not tinkering with the medium of FILM from which THE MATRIX was transfered.

Thanks, a million thanks, Warners for leaving us the organic grain structure!

Just because you don't buy it doesn't make it untrue. Even the 35mm prints you see have a grain softening going on, as the grain of the original camera negative gets filtered as it goes through the process of transferring from OCN to interpositive to dupe negative/internegative to release print. While the original camera negative, as shot, might have some sharp and harsh grain going on, the DP can count on it going through a few generations of transfers to soften it out a little bit. You can also count on a projector to soften out harsh edges due to how light scatters off a projection screen.

Now, taking this into a digital world, if you're scanning a master straight from the original camera negative, you're capturing the sharpest grain structure the film can offer. Whereas a DP could count on the image getting softened through multiple stages of copies being struck (theatrical viewing is typically 4th gen), you're now coming straight off the 1st gen image, with maximum sharpness intact, sharper than what you'd get in a theatrical experience. So if you want to replicate what is seen in the theater, some softening or management needs to occur to the digital image to duplicate the generational loss of sharpness film transfers would have introduced to the theatrical release print.

And that doesn't even cover the HDR conversion tinkering that can strengthen the appearance of film grain over what would have been seen in a theater. Some might get it right, some might not (see the Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon thread for "swarming ants" complaints). I'm already getting too long winded as it is, so I'll move on.

Now, I'm not saying the grain in The Matrix is a problem one way or the other, I'm just pointing out that you can be opposed to the presentation of grain on a specific title *and* like film grain in general at the same time.
Okay, but like I said, un-DNR’d 4K transfers with good HDR passes look so much closer to film prints than SDR Blu-rays or 4K discs that have been even a little “grain managed” (read: DNR’d). I simply do not agree that HDR highlights grain unnaturally. There’s a reason Sony’s clearly unfiltered transfers of stuff like Ghostbusters II and Groundhog Day and Starship Troopers and on and on are the ones that inspire an awed response of, “Wow, it’s like I’m watching a pristine film print!” in ways “grain managed” or SDR content simply doesn’t. Even “taking the edge off” damages fine detail, and ultimately the filmic qualities of the transfer.

We should have a grain/age survey. I guarantee the dividing line would be about 26 and under hate it.

I tend to find the opposite, actually. There seem to be loads of dudes in their 50s or older who haaaaaaaate film grain.

Generally most people don’t find grain appealing. When I was in film school in 2005 most of the people in my class had no interest in shooting on film. I stayed away from those Bozos.

Some men get nudes from their GFs to hasten them home. This man gets saucy pictures of UHDs. I like this man...and his GF.

Got my copy from target!! Somehow it arrived in decent condition. The same can't be said about Fury and Game Night. I ordered them separately not realizing they all came out on same day. But even then the same box does not guarantee anything, assuming they would ship in a box.

Anyways I'm so pumped to watch this. Literally I would watch this every night after working at McDs with a bag of buttered popcorn, the kind you would open the bag like a bowl and pour the packet of butter on. DVD on a portable disc player haha. Now - it's much better circumstances, both in terms of equipment and life,. but the matrix on 4K makes it even better!!! Can you tell I'm excited??

Absolutely, that’s what he means. On a side note, I noticed that you only had one movie in your collection, and was disappointed it was not The Matrix lol.

Last night she wanted to uh... you know, do it, huh huh. [/Butthead]

But I opted to watch JURASSIC WORLD instead.

UHD blu-rays > nudes.

Do it while watching the Matrix. Throw in some pastrami and that’s what they call the trifecta.
