I picked this disc up at Wal-Mart a few days ago and am very happy with the 4K presentation. When putting in the 35th disc that I had already there are a few moments where not as deeply saturated and I for one appreciate the look. Everything looks natural and when colors should be stronger they are there. Like the maroon red car interior, the multi colored jacket Tommy has on during the day. HDR isn't mind blowing but there subtle effects that enhance and make it feel new. The overall image is razor sharp for 95% of the running time and when comparing the 35th disc , the 35th looks too bright and overblown during the daylight scenes in the neighborhood.

I found it at Target a couple of days ago for $14.99 (my first UHD). Since it’s in the ad, most stores should stock it, but probably not more than a few copies.

Yep. And the ‘desaturated green’ of leaves in the day and whatnot only applies to stuff in shady or overcast shots. I find green with direct light on them fare quite well.

I’ve never had an issue with a disc playing on it until now. Other than this it’s been a pretty decent player.

Thumbs up

This is the best I've seen Halloween 1978 look. I think I've been buying every copy of Halloween that Anchor Bay has released (Ever since the 20th Anniversary snow globe released.). IMO, the movie has never looked better.

Wasn't this shot in the spring in California but meant to look like somewhere else in the fall? I imagine you could get all kinds of color timing issues for a film back in that day trying to do things to make one kind of environment look like another. Might be why we see so many changes with different releases.

Yes -- it was shot in California by Cundy, Carpenter, Hill and others in the spring and was timed to make it look like Illinois in the fall. There's even a mistake that was never corrected in which you can see a palm tree in the background of one sequence (which, of course, Illinois doesn't have).

But this is a fictional town in Illinois. They could’ve imported the palm trees.

It seems pretty straightforward: the infamous THX DVD from Anchor Bay retimed it with a hefty blue tint in the darker scenes and a very warm, golden look for the daytime scenes, and people have been holding every subsequent presentation up to that version. Seeing as Dean Candy has overseen two distinct transfers that we know of (35th and now the 40th) with Carpenter's blessing, neither of which feature anything like a fuzzy autumnal feel, then I kinda doubt that that look was never intended. It was shot in California in the spring and it pretty much looks that way with the green trees and grass, save for a few leaves tossed in by the production department, if anything these recent attempts seem to be trying to downplay the palette further to enhance the grimness of it.

So after a number of tries I was finally able to get the disc to play on my X-800.

As curious as I am about 4K (despite the comparison video shared here which made the 35th Ann. blu ray look much better, somehow), I cannot abide that sound remix. The musical cues that are noticeably different are very distracting. I know the mono mix like the back of my hand, having watched the Media VHS about a hundred times from age 9 on... I’m so grateful to have acquired the disc from the box set which features the 35th Anniversary programming and the original mono mix (in a beautiful black plastic case no less).

Palm trees have been found in strange places. And not because they were imported there.

To be honest. The palm tree thing is over emphasised IMO. Each of the two times that they are on screen they are way in the background and not really visible if you are following the action on screen rather than scanning the margins of the frame for revealing mistakes.

That’s weird. Well I guess I have to find a slip on here then. Or maybe I could grab a copy at amazon or Best Buy, take the slip, and return the movie.

Ugh I hate being ocd about slips...
