No need to dump on other films just because they're not SB, it's like SweetieMan and his obsession with Blomkamp whenever Sony announced a catalogue UHD that wasn't D9 or Elysium. He's had his wishes come true, thank fook, and I hope you get yours. In the meantime the rest of us are gonna enjoy the heck of TTC.
Dude I'm not dumping on it. I'm as ecstatic as anyone else is in this thread, I'm pointing out and, trying to figure out Paramounts baffling UHD Blu-ray business strategy.

They've prepared all these brand new scans for film's which, in 2021, a lot of people are more interested in than Ten Commandments. I'm not one of those people, but I'm just saying.

You could just say Geoff you've had a rough week, and I can give this subject a rest for 48hrs.

I see a clear vision with Paramount's strategy and we've been over this before: cash-ins on anniversaries, perennial favourites and new movies relating to older properties. Every studio is preparing brand new transfers for classics that may never hit disc, streaming provides an outlet that has much less financial risk attached, it's just the state of things as they exist in 2021. We're all going to have something dear to us not end up on UHD while less 'important' entertainments get there first.

You don't know anything about the week I've had, which has been busy but fine. How's yours been?

(Geoff, I'm about to post a query in the ZD9 thread I've been pondering over. I'm sure you'll know the answer, ta!).

In all fairness, I understand that the disc based market has changed since Blu-Ray came into existence. With streaming services and digital retailers being widespread also supporting 1080p and now 4K HDR, it might seem redundant to an average consumer that is concerned about the closet space discs take up and see no quality difference between a stream and a disc. It would be nice if 4K releases (looking at you Disney) got more promotion, especially classics that have a prebuilt audience.

Disnee have been verr cautious about live action deep catalogue on disc for many years, they no longer give a crap. Makes me weep for all that Fox and Disnee live action stuff that won't hit UHD or even get a remastered Blu, which is why it annoys me when people argue the toss about what deep catalogue should get a release on UHD in a thread about another film. Let's just celebrate what we do get and make sure that the relevant studio gets the message that it's worth their time releasing a UHD. I get that people don't want to buy films they don't like and that's cool, I'm not after bullying or shaming people to get something they don't need, but at the same time this is physical media's last stand. Day 1, though I hope there's gonna be a tat version somewhere.

I would have preferred to have the 4K on two discs. If it only one disc the bitrate will probably be around 40mbps not including the dolby vision metadata track.
It’s not bad, as fox and disney proved you can have great looking long movies on a bd66. The Martian, Ford VS Ferrari and Endgame come to kind as long movies that look great on bd66 discs, so one bd100 should suffice for this one. But I would still prefere to have 2 discs, even if the second was just a bd66.
Hope Ben-Hur is afforded that courtesy when it finally arrives.
With 2 discs for Ten Commandments, you can easily double the bitrate.

Do we have any official confirmation from Paramount that it isn't two discs on UHD?

Still no original audio. Not surprising since I don’t know of a release with original audio. Still when I run the BD occasionally and marvel at the picture I always get thrown by the newer sound effects.

I suppose the original was mono with mag stereo for the premiere VV runs. There have been multiple stereo remixes on video by this point would it be that hard to just include the original if you were restoring the film and now polishing it further for 4k?

They could have spiffed up a new transfer of the 1923 version and marketed it as a double feature set.

Still it’s great to see and will sell like hot cakes in stores to average consumers who still watch it every year on abc broadcasts.

I wonder if there's time or consideration for Paramount to put "65th Anniversary Edition" on the cover?

1923 film (public domain, but I don't know if the music is): https://archive.org/details/ptp_the-...kv_720p_180770

Here is the 10-minute making-of trailer, which itself is in the public domain:

I guess the current situation means they are trying to automate as much of their processes and production as possible. The 1923 version perhaps required to much direct involvement at this time.

Glad they're including the excellent commentary on the 4K disc, but it's a shame they couldn't be bothered to include the 3rd BD from the previous releases.

It really goes against previous Paramount 4K releases, like Transformers, Star Trek, MI, Saving Private Ryan, Gladiator, Braveheart or Forrest Gump, where they've included the bonus discs if ones existed.

I'm just grateful that the movie is being released in 4K UHD, whether if it'll have the special feature disc or not. The Ten Commandments is a 65 year old movie, and all the cast and filmmakers are deceased.
