Perhaps the digital copy it comes with is the best bet in the meantime? Maybe somebody could chime in if this is right or not-- but I assume you could redeem your 4K digital version on a platform like VUDU, and then watch the downconverted 1080p version. |

Vudu will show whatever 1080p version they're using; it doesn't downconvert the 4K one (e.g. When Grease 4K came out on Vudu, the 1080p version was the non-remastered previous Blu-Ray version of the film).
I suggest he grab a cheap LG UP870 Ultra Blu-Ray player. I grabbed two for $79 each recently. It does a great job of down-converting the 4K discs to 2K while still letting you access Atmos, etc. and when he does get a 4K set, he'll be ready to go. It may not be an Oppo, but it's pretty great for the price. |

I haven't tried every movie I have yet, let alone everything out there, but the half dozen I have tried all looked great. It probably depends on the player. I think the early players had issues, but perhaps they've improved since then? The Matrix looked great (other than cyan on all the remasters in a few scenes I don't think belongs, but it's there on a 4K set too. I tried the LG Ultra with my 720p Panasonic plasma with The Matrix and my 1080p Epson projector. Both looked great as did Angry Birds and the Grease Ultra discs.

Before upgrading to 4K I actually watched the regular blu-ray of the remaster. There are some contrast issues that are more evident in a couple scenes, but for the most part it looked great. Huge improvement over the old disc if you don't like a ton of green.

I agree with this generally. Yes there are some scenes where whites are clipped for sure but the best this title has ever looked at home IMO. |

This kind of packaging around slips has been known to crush corners. Although, wrapped slips are pretty few and far between. I bought mine off bestbuys shelf, and it was wrapped over the slip. I've seen this with Scream factory releases before, Pumpkinhead and The people under the Stairs, off the top of my head. The latter arrived with all corners completely mashed in.

It's what's inside the packaging, the new colored HDR flick, that you find the real treasure, one of the very best 4K discs this year; phenomenally awesome!
