On 2 I'm hoping for an original negative scan which it looks like we really didn't get last time. There was an increase in the tonal color space, (noticeable in fire, flashlights etc.), reduced compression and a lack of over sharpening from the last transfer. But we also might have gotten a small decrease in detail. Certainly not a level of detail I would expect from Eastman 35mm.

On 3 not sure what to expect since I believe they used a new 4K scan last time. So maybe this one will have the smallest jump in quality.

On 4 and 5 we should see massive improvements.
2 and 3 are apparently from new 4K scans of the OCN.

New master + original mono is the big draw here. IDK if those things are to your preference though.
There is a point about waiting until the slips become rare, then put them up for sale. Could be an option. I mean, there will always be someone willing to pay for OOP stuff.

As for new transfer and mono.... You know, I guess it could be an argument for the first movie.... I guess my comment is more aimed at the sequels... Considering that the box set is as good as it is.... You're left with one main incentive... A new transfer is nice, but you're paying more than the Friday set for basically half the films.

I'm not a big fan of 8 and the Rob Zombie movies... But I can't justify selling the deluxe set with only half the series getting a 4k release... Not to mention... The 4ks could be botched given Scream's history.

I wonder what sales are gonna be like for 4 and 5.

The first three are probably guaranteed to sell well. The first is getting the original mono and an option to watch the extended cut with the extra scenes integrated rather than as a separate feature. II and III are making their UHD debuts and they're each classics in their own right.

4 and 5, IMO would be better served as a double pack priced the same as each of the first three, since they have fewer bonus features and alternate versions between them.

I mean, there's nothing wrong with upgrading the ones you like the most and keeping the set anyway. I don't really get the deliberation on it when it's not that serious.

If they're botched either Scream will fix it or ignore it, and in that case I'll just be skipping.

THE GOONIES did it for the UHD. Basically, the studios almost always keep the original "textless" versions of shots that would have credits or text overlaid so they could send clean versions to foreign markets and they could put their own language credits on. So basically, to "rebuild" would be to scan those clean original shots and then redo the credit overlays digitally, or scan the separate film elements for the titles as well and then combine the two elements digitally, thus avoiding the generational loss of the original optically-printed credits/shots with text.

To bundle or not to bundle? I am very back and forth as to whether the posters and vinyls are worth the extra $96 over Diabolik's price. When I boil it down, in an effort to convince myself, it doesn't seem as bad. ($8 per poster and ~$19 per vinyl.) This is my favorite horror series, after all. Hmm...

Thanks, Chris. That’s basically what I was imagining. The bolded text is a horror to a purist like myself. I mean, gaaaahh. I hope to god that hasn’t happened here.

Yeah it was the cool boxes that hold the vinyls and UHDs that did it for me. Looks cool, plus figure that pin set will be a nice sought after collectible.

What do you mean “an IP for credits and effects shots”? Optically printed material isn’t “interpositive”, it’s dupe negative that’s cut directly into the conformed OG negative. The new transfer will be no different in terms of what they’re scanning, but if they want to rebuild the credits etc from separate textless materials that’s up to them.

I was actually calculating for the set without the pins. The one you're talking about would be literally double the price over Diabolik; a much harder pill to swallow. Not to mention more than triple what I paid for the original box set from Scream Factory with all ten films. I'm just not sure I need those pins that much. This hobby is getting pretty expensive these days, I tell you what.[/HankHillVoice]

Unfortunately, I believe the "textless" shots for HALLOWEEN and other opticals (i.e., the portion of the opening POV shot with the "mask" overlaid) are included in the negative trims that were saved from being thrown out by that private collector, so those shots will likely still be scanned from the dupes intercut with the final conformed negative here as opposed to any possible "clean" rebuilds. Maybe not a bad thing, though, as I imagine lots could go wrong trying to match that "mask" overlay and I have no doubt they'd likely mess it up, and the only other optical I can think of in the film is that first daytime shot of the Haddonfield street with the text overlay (although there is one really dupey looking shot of the girls driving the car as the sun is setting and Michael is following behind them right before it cuts to night- dunno if that shot is actually a dupe, or if Cundy was forced to push process that one shot due to the light fading).

Chris

There we go then. Even though digital rebuilds are happening more and more for credits these days (though still quite rare in the grand scheme of things) they’re on major studio pictures with access to all manner of archived elements, not indie stuff like Halloween.
