The one that really shits me is Gone with the Wind, which includes the original mono as an "extra". Checked the audio options, saw there was nothing for the original mono, shrugged it off as obviously not included, watched the film, started going through the extras and there it was.

I just finished rewatching The Matrix for the fourth time. I loved it.

The first time I saw this movie was back in high school, and I thought it was just meh.

Now here's the thing I'm 26, so I didn't see this movie when it first came out.

I think the main reason this movie seemed meh on my first viewing, is because it's been ripped off, and imitated countless times since it's release. So by the time I saw it, nothing about it seemed groundbreaking to me, because I had already seen it in other movies.

I gave it another chance 2 years ago, and still my opinion didn't improve one bit, in fact I thought it was really boring.

I gave it a third rewatch towards the beginning of this year, and I thought it had great plot structure, and other great technical stuff. But still nothing about it excited me. To me it was just ok.

However a few hours ago I gave it a fourth chance, and I finally understood why it's so beloved. It was amazing.

I would give this movie an 8 out of 10. It's incredible. I'm glad I gave it one more chance.

I admire you giving it that many tries (and I’m glad you finally saw the light!). We live in an age with SO MANY movies and television shows, many of them extremely good, competing for our attention that it seems nigh impossible to find the time to give things a second chance, much less three or four (hell, I’m nearly twice your age and if you don’t hook me on a second try, you’re never getting a third). Your persistence is commendable.

8/10? That's essentially a 4/5. That's way too low. This is a perfect movie and nothing came close to it until Fury Road. The only movie I've ever seen more than 5 times in a movie theater.

10/10, easily.

4/5 is a totally fitting score for a movie about reality where the secret is given away in the first twenty minutes and the rest is half-baked prophecy and love. Also would have preferred the original idea where humans were used as processors instead of batteries. Can thank the executives for thinking viewers wouldn't comprehend it.

Time and technological progress lessened it's impact, but it's still a top classic sci-fi.

IMHO The Matrix will always be one of the best films ever made. It did for the film industry in 1999 what Star Wars did in 1977. The bad side effect is that many filmmakers rely way to much on CGI now.

What was really interesting about that is the film came out just a couple months before the long awaited new Star Wars movie and ended up kind of stealing its thunder. At least that was my experience— we were all talking about The Matrix with some reverence and the new Star Wars ended up being this disappointing clunky and dull kids movie.

[Show spoiler]I don't think they could be processors if they're also experiencing the matrix. You're using most of your brain most of the time. So it would be a plot hole like the batteries is.

My interpretation of the revelations of the third movie: they discovered that the machines need the imaginative capacity of the human mind, and thus had become dependent on the humans, as much as humans had been made to be dependent upon the machines. This reveals that the “battery” explanation was another deception.

Agreed.
My list of game changing (Sci-Fi) movies consists of (just so happens there are 1 per decade):
  • Star Wars (1977)
  • Aliens (1986)
  • Terminator 2 (1991)
  • Matrix (1999)
These movies have been copied/imitated over and over (plot/music/SFX/etc).

I'd add Dune (2021) to that list.

What??? Dune was released a year ago. It had literally zero influence on the genre because how could it do it in a year?

The Matrix is a perfect film. It was such a game changer. I'm still slightly miffed they even made any sequels. I agree it is on lists with Star Wars, T2 and other historically influential films. It's funny to me when I see zoomers talking about movies like Matrix, Blade, Aliens etc. and they just don't seem to get it at all and just think "it's good or okay."

Look at what zoomers have been exposed to? Game consoles have uncanny valley graphics these days, everything is tiktok'd, tweeted, filtered, and deepfaked. They were born into the height of digital. The attention spans have changed for the worst, they don't read, can't even read or write cursive... Nothing amazes them, not the natural world, not history, nothing that doesn't exist on some social media platform. They're already in a Matrix of their own.
