For me, the Zimmer score, and especially THAT scene in particular is the one saving grace the film has going for it. I remember thinking the film was so awesome when I first saw it in theatres, but now, it's more of an embarrassment.

It is awesome.

I dunno, there's multiple scenes throughout the movie that are pure joy to witness. MI:2 stands out the most among the others, and that's a good thing IMO. I watch movies to be entertained, and it does that job. Maybe just a little more then some of the others. As for people who have a problem with the slow motion, I never see anyone complain about all of the slow motion shots in The Matrix, and I would argue it has just as much. So why is that do you think?

This fight scene is pretty damn cool too!

Better be careful of that ejection sand when you walk on the beach though. All you have to do is kick something and it jumps 5ft into the air...

The other films in the series are plenty entertaining without being silly. I love me some John Woo action and consider Hardboiled and The Killer to be among the action greats, but unlike those, M:I2 hasn't aged well at all.
And don't get me wrong, silliness and campiness isn't necessarily a bad thing when used in the proper context, but here it just feels out of place and really tacky.
In the other four films, there's a human element to the action that makes them feel tangible. Sure, they're filled to the brim with crazy stunts, but never does Cruise feel like a superhero the way he does in 2. I can admire the work put in to the second film, but at the end of the day, it just doesn't click with me the same way the others do.
If there's a cheap box set released, I'll most likely get that and will probably re-watch the film again, but I can't see myself seeing this as anything but the black sheep of the franchise.

I don't love 2, but it's at worst interesting, entertaining and such a bold about-face from the previous film that I really respect it. Haven't seen it in awhile but I'm excited to revisit it with this release.

This series has no bad films and personally I think it has gotten better with each iteration. An action franchise going on 22 years and on its 6th film and still of such great quality makes it a complete anomaly.

That's exactly it, it feels so tacky and tawdry, not just for this series of films but in general. As the good Captain said upthread there's something about Woo's action minus blood that cheapens it, that kinda exposes it for the nonsense that it is, whereas with a proper R rating you at least get the consequence of that action, there's a pay-off to go with the flying slo-mo doves and whatnot.

Also, MI:II was responsible for a Limp Bizkit-MI themed song.

It doesn’t get any worse than that.

The whole movie is fun. It's a mess, but at least it's never boring.

To be perfectly honest I enjoyed the LB song and the Ben Stiller skit 100x more than the movie itself.

Can you elaborate as to what parts you find silly? I'm here to defend M:I 2 a little because I feel like people tend to have their opinion of it lowered by hearing others complain about parts of it that I have a feeling they probably find acceptable in any other movie. Like the amount of slo motion used for example.

I love the Stiller skit. 2 is terrible but I still enjoy it. Mind you I haven’t seen it in about 8 years.

I LOVE the LB rendering of the classic theme where the guitar opening is pure trailer gold....that is if I could obliterate the godawful words...one day I'd like to find the random single with the instrumental.

I can't bear watching Woo's American output usually. It's such a cartoon of what came before with little to no soul most of the time. But taken for what it is they are full of beautiful choreography and non-CG moments that will likely never be done to that level of perfection again. Despite the story being stupid, ripping off Notorious for no reason, being nothing like the original film or the series, being nothing but a mindless action vehicle to boost Cruise's career a t the time-you still immediately think of the sun baked imagery and diving action moments of M:I 2 whenever it is brought up. Carmike theaters had a logo promo for years with popular moments from modern blockbusters with everything from Harry Potter onwards and for some reason always included the epic shot of the motorcycle going through the flames at the end. It suddenly dawned on me seeing that-that it truly was an epic action moment and the film should just be taken for that and nothing else.
Of course years of crummy video transfers don't help a film's reputation.

I will agree that this series doesn't really have good listenable scores. I was so excited to find the rarer Elfman score only CD of the first film and then listening to it found that it doesn't really work outside the film outside of the big action cue or two.

I'm going to wait until reviews start trickling in or at least until news of a boxset happens...otherwise 1 only to start with. Of course this all happens right after I finally snag the Scandinavian boxset.

Agree about the shot of the motorcycle through the flames. I should find that shot and have it blown up into a poster! Would look sick in my theater room!

But that's just it, if I want American Woo then I'm going to watch Face/Off or Hard Target or Broken Arrow, Mi2 is so far down the list it's not even on the same page.

^^^That's because it was originally a longer movie with more violence. Paramount even went as far as having them remove the sound of bone cracked when necks were broken. We should all start a petition to get that cut released. They've done it before with other movies....
