Watched this for the first time the other day. It looked great in DV and was the first thing I watched in itso that was a plus. Movie was a little too slow and illogical for my tastes though. Definitely not bad per se, but not really my type of movie. I think after all the hype it was hard not for me to be disappointed though.

The only movies I see in the theater are Star Wars, and that's mostly to avoid spoilers. Otherwise I just cant justify the cost, by the time you've bought everything its more expensive then the disc is. Besides the screen being bigger, I'm not really missing much. |

If it's not your type of movie, that's understandable. There's not one movie that is pleasing to 100% of the viewers and at least you are able to admit it achieved it's intent. Still, gimmick or not, a bigger screen is just not it, the entire auditory experience is part of the experience of the film. As Cymbol mentioned, when I saw this in theaters, the entire theater was absolutely silent for the duration of the film. That's never happened before for me. People who bought popcorn or beverages pretty much didn't touch their concessions for fear of making too much noise. People hardly even shifted in their seats. I can't recall the last time I've seen a movie have that much engagement over an audience's experience.
I fear that the general populace watching this at home are NOT doing this film justice (not saying you didn't). Proper surround sound and volume are far more important to a film like this. The idea that less is more went a very long way when it came to this film's audio. The subtle differences whenever we followed Krasinski's deaf daughter's perspective versus any other character were meticulously planned. This experience heightened the other perspectives when you got to hear and experience the subtleties and nuances of the ambiance that she was missing. Also, the notion that silence is equally as important, if not more important can be lost much, much easier if you are not in the right setting when watching the film. |

I'm sure what seem like easy choices for us may not be as easy of a choice for them in that situation. Just a couple examples, [Show spoiler] Ultimately, I just feel like I can relate because I reflect upon myself as a family man. I've made decisions that are not necessarily the most logical when it comes to my children or family, but I've done/am doing the best that I can. I've made mistakes and made decisions that were seeded more in emotion rather than logic. To think that I would make "better" choices or "right" choices if given their situation is kind of pretentious of me.I mean, how logical is it for me to spend thousands upon thousands upon thousands of dollars on this hobby and video games when I could be using it in better ways for my family? It may seem more logical to you, me, and us collectively on this forum, but someone who is not? Incredibly illogical and completely wasteful. |

It's genre. These refrigerator movies can always be picked apart afterward (i.e. the parents were dumb af in the opening scene alone for
[Show spoiler] ), but I thought this one worked well enough in the moment. You either buy into the central premise and go along for the ride, or you don't.

I don't believe genre justify sacrifice of all logic. It's a poor excuse for bad script with catchy idea, I admit, but still bad.

My replies in the spoiler.
As for the objects around the house, it bothers me because I feel nobody cared about making this movie believable. They life changed completely - they can't talk, they can't laugh, cough or sneeze, or even walk outside without using sand. The movie takes all of it pretty serious from the very first minutes, and yet they completely ignored such an obvious thing like their home. |

It's fine if you don't like the movie. But don't try to justify that with nonsense logic. |

Justification for the monster's weakness being legitimate:
[Show spoiler] The only part that bugged me was [Show spoiler] I can forgive pretty much the rest. Though they were really setting us up to think a picture frame would fall or something.
