My player was under $100. Buying new isn't the only option. The used market is vast. Even $200 list price players can be had for less.

Is there a resource page or database that has all the information regarding the material included the Halloween franchise? There's so much content that it's difficult to wrap the head around all of it.

Damn, I do love me isolated film score tracks.

That's good to know for the avid movie watchers like you and I, but general viewers don't want a physical player anymore. Many in my age group (35-40) have dumped all of their physical media: CDs, DVDs (some didn't even bother migrating to Blu-ray) and the players to boot. All because they can stream whatever they want. I sure got some great content out of their garage sales for practically free. When 90% of the populous have adapted to this formula it becomes a lot more difficult for something to stick around.

Yea? That doesn't have anything to do with players being cheaper than some say they are. If one's interested in a player they don't have to dunk hundreds of dollars like some claim.

Just got a pre-shipment confirmation from Scream less than an hour ago. Sounds like HI & III-5 will ship soon (for some reason they're still waiting on HII). The individual 4K + vinyl orders and the 4K + vinyl bundle will start to ship early next week and the bundle with the pins will start to ship on the 28th.

I went for the "no-frills" approach to my order and just got the movie + poster for all 5. So we'll see how soon they get here

EDIT: Looking at scream's site, it look like the posters for HII-H5, the vinyl for H3 and both of the bundles (with and without the pin) are all sold out. If anyone is on the fence for getting the HI or HII vinyl exclusives or the HI poster, you better act fast!

Got the same email. Although it doesn't specifically say the enamel bundles will ship on the 28th, just that that is when the pins are schedules to arrive at the warehouse. Says that "tracking will start to appear toward the end of next week."

A Facebook user responded to me with this

“I dont really get the point of watching a horror movie made in the 70/80’s in 4k? That kinda defeats the nostalgia of it”

What?

Just someone crying over a horror movie exceeding the quality of a rental VHS tape on a small portable CRT TV. Those are the same types of people who cry if any of those movies actually look like they came from a film reel and are matted for widescreen rather than being left at a 4:3 open matte.

Honestly the dumb shit I've seen on film-related fb groups from fanboys who think they know what they're talking about when it comes to film in general is enough to make you want to rip your hair out. The amount of armchair reviewers who think grain is a defect and that the best UHD transfers are ones that are scrubbed of grain is astounding. It's worthless to even try and correct them because they chalk it up to a "difference of opinion" when in reality they're just wrong. I remember one guy going OFF about how Jaws was the worst-looking 4K he'd ever seen. I just logged off after that lol.

I've been thinking of putting one together, but for future reference on the 1978 film:

The upcoming 4K release has nearly everything that's been released domestically to date. The major exceptions from the previous Blu-Ray releases are the archival commentary track and the 'On Location: 25 Years Later' featurette. In the former's case, Cliff from Scream has confirmed that Criterion wouldn't license it out to them for whatever reason. No comment has been given on the latter's exclusion.

The upcoming release also notably features the broadcast television cut. This was accidentally released on VHS in 1984 by MEDIA Entertainment and was quickly recalled (copies of this VHS used to fetch a premium, but I haven't looked recently to see what they're going for nowadays), as well as in Japan on laserdisc. I assume this is what Scream has included on their release, but there is also a rip of the original NBC broadcast (complete with commercials) that has been floating around for a while. It's in much worse shape that the former version, but worth mentioning.

Going back to Criterion, their laserdisc release also featured an isolated music & effects track that - to my knowledge - has never been ported over on any subsequent release. Their mono track also differs in quality from the one that Scream used for the 2014 box set.

ESC Editions (French-based label) has put out of a few of their own releases for Halloween that feature some exclusive bonus features. From what I've gathered, they're essentially video essays about the legacy of the film and of John Carpenter's influence on horror.

Additionally, both AMC (as part of their AMC Backstory series) and A&E produced documentaries on Halloween. AMC Backstory: Halloween has never received a release of any kind, while Halloween: The Inside Story (A&E) did received an MOD release in the states courtesy of Amazon, as well as a UK release. Interestingly, the two versions feature different narrators.

In terms of the film itself, there have been a variety of transfers/presentations of it. In addition to the main US ones, Australia's Umbrella Entertainment and Germany's Starlight also put out their releases in the mid-2000s that featured a different transfer than the US versions had.

Things are less complicated on the sequels, but I can delve into those later on if there's a demand for it.

I don't really get the point of trying to get anything useful from facebook after 2008. The abundance of idiots posting stupid misinformation about movies and 4Ks kinda defeats the nostalgia of it.

If I'm not mistaken I believe there are critic commentaries for HII & HIII that have only ever been available in Europe. It's a shame because I'd love to hear those.

DVD is still the most popular-selling format. That's insane considering blu-ray has been around for well over 10 years now, and we're into the next format, and still most people haven't adopted blu-ray, and never will. And as you said, you can get a cheapo blu-ray player for $50 in WalMarts. You could price UHD players at $25 and people still won't buy them, because most people don't see what the point is. Most people are either happy with DVD, or they stream. That's the sad reality.
