I feel the same way. I've seen Evil Dead countless times. Evil Dead 2 I think I've seen maybe three times, Army of Darkness twice, years ago, and then again when the Shout Factory CE came out. I just can't get into the humor, and I tend to like horror-comedies.

The Evil Dead and Army of Darkness are opposites for me since I feel like the former just keeps getting better with time while latter just keeps getting worse. AoD was the first film I ever saw in the series and I loved it. I then worked backwards through the other two and I was not impressed with The Evil Dead on first viewing. But every time I revisited The Evil Dead I liked it more and more until it eventually became one of my all-time favorites. Yet last time I watched Army of Darkness I could barely sit through it. Meanwhile, The Evil Dead 2 is just solid as a rock. Really excited that we're getting that on UHD soon.

I have a similar experience, but maybe the inevitable UHD will refresh Army of Darkness for me once again, and I'm sure some of it is just that I played out that one out so much, while neglecting this one most of the time. Wouldn't say it's in my own top 25, but it's the one I'm keenest on right now, for sure.

I like the first and third films best, and the second is the weakest link for me.

The first two are masterpieces - the original in particular is amongst my all-time favourite films. I like Army of Darkness quite a bit, but I've always considered it the worst of the trilogy.

Heh, Army of Darkness is my favorite followed by Evil Dead 2 and then the original in a distant third.

She kind of dislikes movies in general, so it's hard getting her to watch stuff. Opposites attract and all that. She's a TV show girl. When she randomly decides to join me for a film she usually finds them boring or "stupid" and stops paying attention halfway through, or outright leaves the room. So... I dunno, showing her Evil Dead 2 isn't high on my list of priorities. Maybe someday though, since it's so different.

The movies she's genuinely liked the last few years are Terminator 2, Kingsman and Rob Zombie's Halloween movies, of all things.

Never let the wife influence your opinion of a movie. Trust me, this happened to a good friend. He ended up watching Sex and the City and peeing sitting down. I kid you not. (smiley face, but still, true story)
I was lucky my wife loved the ED films when I turned her on to them. Anyway, fine if you want a pure horror, or narrative experience. For some people, part of the joy of watching B-movies and such, is a sincerity or off-kilter hand-made charm, and the "meta" multiple levels viewing thing, for lack of better words.
EDIT: I just noticed your last post on wife's viewing habits. That should be a red flag to ya, right there. (another smiley emoji). Still, I know it's nice when you can do stuff together, but...

The original will always be my favorite. In my opinion, the problem with 2 and 3 is that they think they're just so darn clever; listen to the (overcrowded) commentary on 2 and you will hear everyone tripping over one another as they try to explain how funny each of their ideas were. The gore isn't as messy as the first film; it just feels so plastic and sanitized and lacks the grit of the first. And those long sequences of possessed Ash are torture to sit through.

I thought 3 was hilarious when I was 16. Twenty years on, not so much. I probably don't need to see that one ever again.

The original is just a chilling, tight little thriller with crazy atmosphere and over the top effects that has fun without being a cartoon. It's amazing what they were able to accomplish with so little.

and don't forget the 'tree rape' scene, this movie was never meant to be OTT "funny", there was a semi nihilistic nasty streak in it's tone and intensity that none of the other two had or attempted.

Well, this is closer than the BD. You can always seek out the old Book of the Dead DVD edition, but honestly I wouldn't recommend the big drop in quality for the sake of a few digitally painted-out goofs.

Some of the remaining ones like the stabilising of the moon matte would only annoy the most anal of fans. I'd argue that's standard restoration methodology to tidy up technical issues.

IIRC, the only time Raimi actually cut anything was the lightning hitting the tree in the 1999 DVD. That has thankfully been the only time that happened and it's back in every version since.
