And by "old" shows I am referring to shows from the '80s mostly. When I do watch tv nowadays. I haven't sat down to watch new tv shows hardly at all within in the last 9 years or so with the exception of The X-Files.
X-Files had a solid first 4 seasons (solid, not amazing) and then it just dropped off a cliff and became one of the worst shows on television. The final two seasons especially were embarrassing, and the reboot was trash.

Now, it's fair enough if you were to prefer it over The Wire, but objectively, The Wire wipes its ass with it in terms of writing, character development, and how well constructed the complex and multi layered narrative is.

While you're at it, check out The Sopranos, too.

Many would argue that the first 5 seasons plus the first movie was The X-Files at its prime. And they were amazing seasons (arguably the best television has produced). I wouldn't disagree with that, but I still found plenty to love about seasons 6-9 and even really liked the last two seasons that just aired. For a show with 11 seasons, it's hard to be quality throughout every season. 11 is a lot. I don't see how Law and Order SUV does it. I will try and check out The Wire. Mind you I'm not going to pay an arm and a leg just to watch it though. If I can't find any deals then I guess I will just have to miss out. And Streaming is not an option.

I didn't expect to like the Wire but loved it. Not my favorite but definitely in my favorites. Its one of those shows that is hard for most people to thoroughly enjoy, at worst and be in their all time fav list, at best. So hard to go wrong watching it. McNulty alone is reason to watch. Dude just doesnt give a F, love it

I was always partial to Frasier myself. It was clever how they tied the two series together and also tried to explain away the fact that he never mentioned his brother or father on Cheers.

I like Fraiser better. I wasn't too keen on Fraiser for a while there, but recently saw some reruns on Hallmark and I have to say that Fraiser is a really funny show. Much more so to me than Cheers. Or rather I should say that Fraiser has aged much better where Cheers has not.

OK, well my S1 disc from the 1-7 set has the same file size for episode 2 as the S1 disc from 1-7 that they used on caps-aholic, but my S1 disc from the standalone, single season (collector's not that I think this part makes a difference) set does have a bigger file size and definitely hits a higher bitrate for the video. Now whether it is better or not, haven't really looked into it. Perhaps they used a more advanced compressor for the new disc and got same or better quality over with less bitrate, but the old standalone certainly uses higher, sometimes considerably higher bitrate.

Same for seasons 2 and 3.

I wonder what the story is for 4-7, since those already had Atmos would they have bothered redoing them at all for the 1-7 box set?

I have the individual releases, not the set. But, Season 4 didn’t have Atmos on initial release. They started that with 5.

ah ok, thanks, season 5 is the switchover then

anyway, if you have a PC that can read them, could you post the total disc size for season 5 (and, if you could, go into the directory and into the STREAM folder and post the file size of the two largest files)

curious if they re-did 5-7 that already had Atmos or not

i'll eventually try a few screen caps to see what the differences are, if any, for a few scenes from season 1, from the rather different bitrates

Weird, I wouldn't call it serialized at all. Even the "mythology" episodes mostly stood by themselves IMO, with a few exceptions.

hmm I'd call it serialized, their relationship, his progression in the agency, her slowly changing thoughts on things, the over all background story built more and more, the cigar smoking man and the slow build to learn more and more about who he and various other side characters were.... I mean sure they did individual cases that many times were not connected but so what?

Not to derail the thread, but Frasier did in fact mention his father on Cheers. I just watched an episode where he referenced his dad cutting off his allowance.

After so many seasons and episodes, it was probably hard to keep track of every little piece of writing on Cheers.

See, I'd say that was more a show in the Buffy/Doctor Who/Supernatural format; standalone episodes connected by running story and character arcs. You can watch any episode at random and get a complete self-contained story out of it, with larger overarching story elements playing a part but not making the episode inaccessible to newcomers. It's serialised in a sense, but not in the traditional way. A serialised show is when one story is split into multiple episodes while this is more the procedural format with some elements of serialisation (each episode is a standalone "case" but there are some running plot threads).

Indeed. Even "mythology" episodes like Piper Maru/Apocrypha work pretty fine as standalone stories, with their own specific plots and climaxes. They make sure to fill in the stuff that is important... who Krycek is, etc... for new viewers.

It's very different from Sopranos or Game of Thrones, which are like 13 hour long or 80 hour long stories told in chapters, respectively.

Something to bear in mind for the people who are planning on buying the individual series again.
