Oh I hope so. As much as I've opined that the filtered OG mono is better than no OG mono that's another reason why I'll wait. And it's not like having an un****ed mono track plus betterer compression of the new transfer is some kind of unicorn release, I've got faith that someone somewhere is going to be able to put them together. After all, it's Halloween: they will never, ever stop re-releasing this movie for as long as home video exists.

If he wrote it in a drunken stupor the night before, why didn't he realize how "poor" it was the next day? Why did he submit it after he sobered up if he just scribbled it out when he was drunk? And writing a script when you're drunk is not what I would consider professional.

I'm sorry, but his excuse never worked for me. He wrote it, he filmed it, it's canon, and people watched it for decades. Then he came up with an excuse of why he didn't like it and wrote it out in H18. I'm not a fan of any of that tomfoolery.

And many still like Halloween II just as it is.
To my knowledge Carpenter has never claimed he wrote Halloween in a drunken stupor. The first occurrence of this anecdote(again, at least to my knowledge) was during a Mark Kermode documentary for the BBC. Carpenter said (paraphrasing here), he didn't want to do a sequel, it was late (he would often leave script writing projects until last minute) and he had a six pack of beer and it was the best he could come up with. It was to show that he had not put much thought into the script, a script he felt he was forced into writing.

The reason Kermode asked him in the first place was to establish for his documentary audience that Laurie and Michael had no connection in the original film, nor had Carpenter ever intend there to be one until he found himself wrangled into writing a second picture (I can't remember exactly but I think this was a stipulation for he and Hill getting a larger share of the financial trappings of the film they created) and so whatever about the plots points and arcs of the sequels; the first film stood alone and distinct and things like the familial connection established in the second film were an after thought which should not effect the experience of the first film.

So he was asked a question about the writing of Halloween II and he answered it. It's not an excuse, it's what happened as Carpenter remembers it.
I don't expect he gives two shits about what other people think is canon or not. And rightly so.

That's pretty well unlikely, they don't typically license from other groups like that.

It's a combination of a couple of things: John Carpenter and Debra Hill were essentially told a sequel was going to happen regardless; neither of them had made much money from the original so they did the sequel to get a larger payout than they had gotten in 1978; they figured it'd be a way to kill off Michael Myers and turn the series into an anthology. Jamie Lee Curtis also had no desire to return as that was when she was trying to move on from horror into other genres, but did so out of loyalty and appreciation for the first film being her launching pad.

Hmm is that how it works? I assumed out of stock means just in general and my order will sit there until they get more in. I'm so sick of amazon. This happens every time I pre-order anything that is remotely popular. What the **** is the point of pre-ordering.

I also wouldn't be opposed if Criterion managed to get permission to work on Halloween (1978) again a few years down the line. It's doubtful they get the license but if they did we would get a great result with the picture and audio. But I can already see the Atmos enthusiasts get mad if Criterion got the film because they could veto including a surround mix in the release.

if Criterion got it, it would probably be yet another mediocre at best encode and an even more filtered mono track than what we have here, since they always love to apply unnecessary "additional restoration" to a lot of their audio tracks and similar to Shout have a lot of problematic encodes

Hmmm, I haven't purchased anything from Criterion in a while so their standards must have dropped through the years.

You didn't get the memo? Because DGG retconned the series all the way back to H1 with H2018, Shout has secretly agreed to make parts 2 through 5 only available after the release of Halloween Killz, because technically they don't exist. Check Facebook. It's happening right now.

Have you ever seen ABL trigger on the A90J watching movies? I haven't as of yet (I use gradient and dolby dark though). Even in video games I've yet to trigger ABL, although I've seen it get triggered once on a Youtube video, but the player was using brightness preferred and it was an ultra bright day time scene in an FPS where he was aiming at an angle that had a lot of sky for an extended period of time. As far as my experience goes the A90J is the first OLED to truly defeat ABL once and for all.

Could the fact that the Shout has less grain be due to it coming from the OCN and not an Interpositive? I mean even a generation down would add grain. Doesn't resolve the mediocre encode though. All in all looking through the caps I do think the Shout wins most comparisons (even ignoring the aspect ratio difference).

Amazon is still telling me that my pre-order won’t be delivered until mid November, so I put in a pick up order from Best Buy at midnight. It is just annoying because I had used the $15 coupon that Amazon had on this, so I guess that was a waste.
