This is good news as MI and MI2 are extremely dated DVD transfers that were High Definition of course, but nonetheless are the same transfers that were used on the DVD's released in 2000. Really excited to here this news especially concerning the DD 5.1 tracks used on the first 3 films.

MI2 doesn't look that much better than the DVD to be honest. It's a dumb movie but I'm such a Woo fan that I still have a soft spot for it. |

I'd buy 3, 4 and 5 in UHD.

That was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever had in a theater. I was holding my breath the entire time because it was so real and intense. IMAX scenes like that are just a joy to behold.

The compression is really noticeable in the Jail scene also when they are using the iPad in the Kremlin to mess with the image. At its worst, it most noticeable when Jeremy Renner is telling his back story to Paula Patton and Simon Pegg and severely visible in the scene where Tom Cruise is talking to Paula Patton on the airplane on their way to India. Even the Skydance intro has the same issues. I tried different players back then, but just saw that it was the disc. Even now when I play it on the Sony X800, all those issues are still there. I was interested in seeing the standard release, but I didn't want to buy the film again back then. |

In the case of Transformers the other 4 movies debuted on UHD alongside the UHD of Last Knight, so I think you have your answer. It means waiting a bit longer but we'll survive, and it gives them more time to work on them which can only be a good thing.

M:I in 4K would be a dream. It's one of those films where I pull out my cherished Laserdisc copy and watch regularly.
Why you ask? All the DVDs and BDs are dated masters not done very well. (I still need the import version with HDMA!) And they all lack the ferocity of the original sound design that you can only hear on LD and rare arthouse print showings. So the LD is still the one to beat. Seriously. And I confirmed it last year seeing the film on the big screen again and enjoying seeing the audience blasted around by the powerhouse Mr. Gary Rydstrom. I love this film, I love the dark tone and I love the sound so much it became one of my all time favorite watches. I know I'm in the minority but I think this is not only the best in the series, Cruise's best film but also DePalma's best film. |
