Read a recent interview. Joaquin didn’t want any of the comic book elements, like the Waynes, and wanted to get fat for the role. Look, if your star doesn’t want anything to do with the comics, then don’t make a movie about the comic book character! Nothing I’ve seen from this suggests he’ll be anything like the Joker from the comics. Even Ledger’s Joker, as wildly different as that was, he was still true to the character. This could’ve been just a run-of-the-mill ripoff of pre-Goodfellas Scorsese that nobody would’ve cared for but because it’s an IP, people notice. Phillips is going around and claiming how he wanted to make art when all he wanted was just our dough, which isn’t a bad thing as long as you’re not lying to us.

One topic of conversation has revolved around its level of violence, but director Todd Phillips believes that it's all a matter of tone and the standalone DC movie isn't as violent as you think.

Quote:
"I think we're very careful with it. A lot of people assume, or think, it's going to be a really violent movie – but if you break it down to the amount of people that he has an issue with, I think the reason it affects you differently is because we tried to paint it with as realistic a brush as possible.

"I mean, you could watch a movie like John Wick 3 and there's a much higher amount of violence – but when it comes [in Joker], it feels like a punch in the stomach. It is all just a balancing act of tone."

The trailers i’ve seen for this have been so freaking phenomenal that it will be absolutely heartbreaking if the film ends up sucking or being underwhelming.

...it has to be great.

Scorsese worship and an art house drama disguised as a comic book film probably angered a bunch of the mcu basement dwellers on this forum, its not like there was going to be engaging or thought provoking discussion before it was released anyhow.

I watched a great review and discussion from Fandom Entertainment this morning and it's creating a new interpretation I didn't even think about. I'm curious what you guys think.

They say in a round about way that this movie is really good and really disturbing and if it was titled “anything other than Joker” it would be a real life portrayal of a disturbed individual, but — since it is the “Joker” it now has the possibility to be glorified and potentially even mimic’d… They don't say this in a 'raise the red flag' way at all, but since our culture is the way it is right now — there is that potential because this film is that real.

Here's my take:

Since it is “Joker,” something we all know takes place in a fictional ‘Gotham world’ there is a slight disconnect from reality, even if it doesn’t appear that way on screen — that creates less opportunity for real-life glorification. If it was “just about a guy” the actual Joker effect could take place in reality where people want mimic someone on screen in a real world. That’s where I think the comic-book references in the movie remove that opportunity to take place.

That’s just my opinion, I’m looking forward to seeing this film.

I’m not sure I see the point of a 35mm release of a movie that was shot and finished digitally? Definitely think I would prefer Dolby for that.

Ah okay, that makes more sense then. Looks like IMDb has some incorrect technical info (which isn’t surprising). Still, it was finished digitally. I saw the also-digitally-finished OUATIH in 35 and thought it was a very underwhelming experience visually.

Do you have a link confirming this? I’ve always heard Joker was shot
On ARRI 65, IMDb also says ARRI Mini and Large Format. They can be wrong. But it’s also not on Kodak’s list of movies shot on film. The ARRI Instagram also lists it as being shot on those cameras.

Not shot on film, but the Arri Alexa 65 apparently: https://cinematography.com/index.php...oenix-dc-film/

Quote:
Gregory Irwin worked on the film and gave me some technical details on the film, I don't know if I can share yet but I can at least say (as the info is on the official Alexa 65 website) that the film was shot on the Alexa 65 by Lawrence Sher, a Todd Phillips regular
And here's Arri's website (scroll all the way down): https://arrirentalgroup.com/alexa65/

IMDb got it right for once.

My fault. Could've sworn I read that Phillips and Sher shot this on film.

To be fair, when I first saw the trailer I swore up and down that I was looking at 35mm. They've gotten quite good at emulating the look of film with digital cameras these days.
