This was the movie that made me stop listening to the mob when they trash a movie. I held off buying it for so long due to how much people complained about it and when I finally saw it, I thought it looked great overall with some minor issues that don't take away from it.

What a breath of fresh air that is. Been saying that years. Enjoyed a viewing all of them. Love it!

There needs to be more people that don't see 5 incessant posters in a thread as inherently meaningful. Certainly not to conflate it with objectivity. Its their personal opinion. The amount of time the mob number means zilch because 9/10 haven't seen the disc? Holy shit so common.

The hyperbolic reactions gone on so long now its unchecked.

The UHD transfer is terrible and really hurts the film. I saw half the film projected in UHD, and the rest of the film with the old Blu-ray. The old Blu-ray is flawed, but much better.

Yes and no. There are some sequences that look significantly better on the UHD.

it's among the earliest cases of a Paramount 4K transfer that's incredibly frustrating but is overall the best there is currently

Right. For example, Forrest's running sequence largely looks very good. However, if you look at the scene when Forrest meets Bubba and Lt. Dan in Vietnam it looks rather processed.

Even in those scenes it still shows more natural detail compared to the old BD, the old BD was another unsurprising subject of sharpening and video noise in place of proper grain

The grain in the 4K transfer looks more fine and proper (in the non-processed moments at least) compared to the noisier and chunkier grain and video noise in the old BD's master

The old BD only looks better in stills

The 'looks better in stills' comment is noteworthy. I've noticed several where the Paramount Presents titles appeared to look less detailed in screen caps compared to older releases but apparently were preferred in motion.

The last time I watched this UHD it didn't bother me as much compared to the first time I watched it where the inconsistencies were more jarring. Now it's still a bit jarring, but definitely less to me. Maybe because my expectations are now more in line and I'm also a little more tolerant I suppose given some of Paramounts even more troubled looking discs. Last time I was able to roll along 'okay' with this disc.

There have been several instances I've noticed where people only THINK an older transfer looks better than a newer one based on caps but the newer one looks so much better in motion (ex. True Lies), caps don't always tell the whole story and they're not supposed to, they're just there to give an idea of what things look like

I agree 100% most 4k movies look substantially better in motion than in CAPS (excluding True Lies and Aliens which look worse in motion).

Still haven’t bought Goodfellas on 4K. Happy with my 25th Anniversary Blu-Ray. I held off on the 4K ‘cos of the poor review on this site. Which appeared to be all about the colours. However, I might revisit this situation since it appears that the colours found on the scanned in 4K 1080pBD are the same as the 2160pBD. With GoodFellas in my Top 10 faves of all time, it’s not ideal to know I have held off this long in getting GoodFellas in 4K, based on one bad PQ review.

I came to this site to check out both the “official” review and the thread, since Australia is getting a re-release of Gump. While I’ve never been all that keen on Forrest Gump, since it won Best Picture, and I felt that Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, and Quiz Show were all better films, I still want it in my collection. However, I do consider Gump to be a film that is flawed, especially since I work with individuals with intellectual disabilities, and while it is a great nostalgia flick, IMHO, it really doesn’t feel that it is Best Picture Oscar worthy.

Anywho… I digress. I agree that listening to the mob can be a dangerous thing. It is important to check out what both the mob and semi-professional enthusiasts are saying, and taking all these factors into consideration when trying to work out whether poor PQ/AQ is going to disqualify a BD/4K buy.

You, sir, are a kindred spririt. As luck would have it, I name-checked all three of those superior 1994 films in my just-published Forrest Gump Steelbook review and also used the word "digress". Additionally, I felt that our initial 4K site review was a little unfair so I regraded it, and I thought the same of Goodfellas which I similarly re-reviewed in Steelbook form awhile back. Both links are below.

I wondered about the color difference and liking the old BD colors over the new, but I looked again at the cap of Forrest on the bench and in the old he has a grey jacket and the new a very light grey, almost biege looking. I then looked at the one sheet posters of him on the bench and the jacket wasnt grey, it was closer to the 4K.

Nice one Randy. The 4K transfer has problems for sure, but I quite liked it at the time and still do.

I just wish it had grain and didn't look so processed. Otherwise, I've seen worse. From Paramount, too.
