The refused to push the release date because it would have effected their executive bonus's. That was reported awhile back. And it looks like they expected it to fail and cut it to 2hrs to cram in as many showings as possible before fans found out. The whole situation is a mess and embarrassing for WB

In brief:

It was a mess of a production from the very beginning. WB kept Snyder on even after the response to BVS and pressure from Time Warner higher ups to remove him. Snyder promised he'd deliver a film significantly different to BVS and instead delivered a film that was basically more of what audiences disliked about BVS just with more awkward jokes thrown in. The film went through rewrites and restructuring all through production as no one seemed to have a clear idea of what the end product should be. Not even Snyder himself. WB went into a panic as the response to screenings of a very rough cut were... not positive. The term "unwatchable" was thrown around quite a lot. Snyder stepped away from the film after the death of his daughter (or was fired if you believe the rumours) and Joss Whedon was brought in to direct the previously scheduled reshoots and finish the film on time. Whedon reshot most of the Superman scenes (as these were the scenes that apparently really weren't working) and added in more character moments. People like to blame Whedon for how the film turned out, but from the sounds of things it was a mess when he came onboard and he didn't have much chance or opportunity to really change much and fix much of what needed to be fixed (some leaks report some of the elements people dislike were there from the very beginning). WB installed a two hour running time mandate (it's an open secret in Hollywood that if you know your film is bad you make it as short as possible - hence why The Dark Tower and Fant4stic were less than 100 minutes) and refused to push back the film's release date (as executives would have lost their bonus if the film didn't release in 2017). The film was rushed for it's November release date and this is why most of the VFX is unfinished.

Ultimately the film was constantly changing, did not have a clear vision and was rushed for purely selfish reasons when the film really needed to be pushed back by 4 months or so. If the film released in March (with WB moving Tomb Raider to August to account for it) we'd be having a very different conversation.

Yeah it really should've been delayed. I don't think what we got is the trainwreck it's made out to be, but there's clearly a TON of missed potential here. Especially for something of this size and scale that probably should've been the studio's biggest grosser of the year.

Perfect explanation pottyb. WB also cut 45 minutes off of Superman 4 remember as well when screenings bombed. I wonder if all the Superman Justice League scenes will be on the the new Blu-ray. Does anybody know how long the deleted scenes are slated to run?

I wanted JL to be a great 5* picture quality showcase but the CGI was a bit sub par and moustachegate didn't help. Hope the rumours of them continuing to work on the CGI were true and that it shows up on home release. It's especially telling it's not out just yet when Ragnarok has released recently.

That's not all entirely true. Quite a few people that saw the Snyder screening liked it much better than the one that ended up being released. The term unwatchable came from multiple executives and was likely used more for PR as a reason to fire Snyder late in the game. No matter your opinion on Snyder's movies, he doesn't make "unwatchable" movies. Decisive....yes.... Unwatchable, not so much. WB was just so gung ho on making the movie funnier and more marvel like that they didn't care how frankensteined it was.

While I very much am a Snyder fan and hope to see his version one day, I will say that if WB wanted to go another direction, they should have removed him before filming began. I understand that they only had weeks after BvS released, but they should have pushed it back. Or, just let Snyder finish his trilogy and move on after that. Either way would likely have been a better senario than what we got. I don't hate JL, but it was my biggest disappointment in recent years. It is definitely watchable, and by all accounts should have been another Fan4stic. But my disappointment came from my love of MoS and BvS. I wanted and expected JL to be the end of the trilogy, and that was what was advertised all the way up through the final trailer. I don't put as much blame on Whedon as most, I do however put 90% of the blame on WB

Whether you loved or hated MoS and BvS, Snyder had the guts to be different than other comic movies. I liked having a difference between DC and Marvel, but now that is likely gone. Everything will be Marvelized in every francise from every studio from now on. They know people will pay for it. This is the one achievement JL has, it killed all originality from movies.

The funny thing is, they COULD have pushed the film back without affecting their bonuses because the merger with AT&T is what they were afraid of. They were afraid that if the merge finalized before JL came out, they could be fired. Now that the merger is postponed, they have no excuse. It could have been done. Hell, like meatball said, they could have hired another director. They had an insane amount of post time, they could have cut that down by going more practical with locations and stunts (reducing the cost and time of rendering entire locations and action scenes with CGI).

Just goes to show that the suits wanted to just get past Justice League, not invest more time and money into it. They knew it was a mess, better to rip the bandage off and get it over with rather than prolong their suffering. Now that it's over, hopefully they'll start making some solo hero movies that people enjoy (I've really liked most of the DCEU so far, but clearly I'm in the minority there) and build the brand back up so we can get a proper Justice League 2 that people love and breaks the bank. Here's hoping.

True enough, but it's only two hours long and even with Warners probably stuffing loads of extra languages on there I doubt it was really gonna suffer for it. Dunkirk also got a 66GB and I think Warners might've liked that one a touch more than JL.

I always fast-forward through the opening scene with Sups and the kids and just get straight to the film. I can deal with the rest just fine. Also, Flash makes this movie for me so I'm a fan.

Are both deleted scenes on the standard release or is one of them a bonus for Walmart or target?

Didn't see this in theaters because it sounded like a Suicide Squad trainwreck but can't resist buying it for UHD on day one. I love Batman and Superman and am a big fan of Snyder (shocking someone admits that on the interwebs, I know) so I'll have to get something out of it.

It's gonna be one of the bigger movie bummers of recent times for me that BvS was seen as a failure and DC freaked out and radically changed course. I love Man of Steel and (the extended cut of) BvS, and would have loved to of seen how that tone and style kept going with further films. Oh well...
