Default S300 firmware available

Hi!

Just to let everyone know, I found that Sony was offering a "2.60" firmware update, for the s300, on the Sony Style website. Click on "customer care", then click on "downloads/updates". The page will present a space to enter your model number, and then you will be given the option to download the upgrade, or receive a DVD of the software.

Be sure to have your model's serial number at hand!

Hope this is helpful

They say DVD. Don't screw with it in that sense. I mean, it is small enough to fit on a CD, but the bit rates of DVD are higher, so it should copy a LOT quicker for you.

That should take you to the firmware for your player.

Yes, I did the leg work for you.

Smile 2.6 Upgrade On Sony Bdp-s300

I sent away for the 2.6 up grade from Sony. It came in 3 days on a dvd and loaded without a hitch. The player didn't respond exactly as the instructions, the dvd ejected automatically at the end, but a check of the S300 set up showed it was now operating at 2.6.

Can,t say there is anything different to see . My player has performed well from the get-go but be warned that if you start entering commands from the remote without waiting for the previous commands to execute you are asking for a lock-up. Just like my lap top come to think of it.

My general impression of Blu-Ray so far is that the quality of movies (transfers or whatever) varies from wonderfull to "why bother". I own 1 BR disc "The 300" and rent the rest from Blockbuster. "The 300" looks great but has that certain flat look I have seen described elsewhere. Never the less it is my only standard. Regular dvds played on the BDP S300 almost always show improvement.

Samsung SIR_TS160 HIGH DEF DIRICTV Receiver
Denonn AVR_2500 AV Receiver

I would highly recommend looking into some reference quality films. 300 is too artistically grained to use for that purpose of comparison.

I typically buy movies that have a definite/noticeable PQ improvement over SD.

Default Dts-ma

Does anyone know if the S300 will at some point support DTS-MA? With all the new Fox releases using DTS-MA not supporting it will cause me to look at other players.

No, it will not. That's one of the reasons why it costs less then $500. In order to achieve that price, Sony had to cut (not include) some of the features other high end player had or will have.

If price point is important to you, then you may want to look into the BD-P1400 from Samsung. That has added DTS-HD MA support via bit sream output through a firmware update and you can get it on the web for around $430. Of course you'll need a compatible receiver capable of decoding DTS-HD MA as well.

Can anyone tell me why I can't get up scaled DVD over my high def component cable? HDMI does it, why not component.

I just sent a support request to Sony asking for that setup option. If I have to watch Transformers on DVD, it may as well be upscaled.

You never know what the 3.0 firmware may give us.

Default Question on BDP-S300...

Does anyone know if it is technically possible that a future firmware upgrade can add the HD sound decodings (DD TrueHD & DTS-HD Master Audio) to this player? Or do we have to buy a new player that by default has these decodings?

TIA

Part of me says yes, another part of me says no because the "hard wired" chipset may not support it. As I have said before, these players are specialized "single purpose" computers. They can only be flashed for new features within the capabilities of the existing chipset. Someone with more knowledge of the insides may be able to tell you.

I am hoping for upsampled DVD through component cable, but it may come down to hard wiring issues and not be possible. But I REALLY want this. Buying a new TV is just not a very good option right now.

Default Question About the S300 update.....

Hey everyone!

I've had a S300 since July and I love it! I burned the firmware update 2.60 onto a DVD-R and I'm wondering what exactly is on the disk after the image is created? I have four files one is titled BRANDED and then three other files with the .BIN extention. I need someone to tell me if that is the correct configuration for the firmware disk. (I have windows VISTA and Sony's website doesn't say anything about that OS.) I thought I would check before I throw it in.

Any info would be great.

Happy Blu owner,

FP

I also have Vista and burned the DVD but wasn't sure because of OS. And I didn't want to take a chance scewing up the player, so I ordered it from Sony's website and got the DVD in about seven days. The files on the DVD are the same as you said, here is what I see on the DVD:

File Name Size Date Modified
--------- ---- -------------
BRANDED 1KB 9/20/07
S0001.BIN 1KB 9/20/07
S0002.BIN 64,331KB 9/20/07
S0003.BIN 1KB 9/20/07

S0003.BIN 1KB 9/20/07

Hmmmm...thats different then what my burned disk has:

BRANDED 29 bytes
S0001.BIN 128 bytes
S0002.BIN 62.8 megs
S0003.BIN 128 bytes

Maybe its a good thing I didn't use it. I guess I'll have to send for the disk.

Thanks for the info!

FP

It won't...not enough silicon underneath the hood.

Why is it illegal to upsample a DVD though component and not HDMI? Can't just tell me that and leave me hanging. Geeze!
