Been impressed with Sony's prompt delivery of FW update discs. Very fast at 4-5 business days.

I have also been downloading the FW file and burning ISO image to a CD. Lastest version took about 20-25 minutes to load.

Someone say the S300 are dropping down to $300? If so, Where?

I'm thinking of exchanging my Samsung 1400 for the Sony S300. Would that be a wise decision?

I have the S300 and only can tell you experience. This unit as has flawless for me since I've had it. I just update the FW when available and it has played all HD-DVDs and SD I've played.

I'm assuming you meant Blu Rays. I'm kind of a n00b.

Also, have you tried POTC AWE or LFODH?

I would just go with what you have for right now. The 1.1 Profile for BD's just came out and the S300 (in all likelihood) will not be able to run 1.1 specs. There have been grumblings of getting the DTS Master Audio and True HD audio specs via firmware but who knows.

Save some money and buy an newer player later in the year. Something a little more future proof.

I'm assuming he meant blu-ray too. I have watched both POTC AWE and LFODH, and both play flawlessly on my S300.

For the NEW sale price that it is going to have (somewhere aroung 275-300 bucks) it is a great player, as long as you realize it will never do PiP, or have on-line capabilities.

I have to add my 2 cents and say my S300 has minimal fault. Unless you want to go to the PS3, and 80% of the people here seem to have done so, you can't go wrong with the s300. POTC loads in 2 minutes with 3.30 firmware. Used to be 4 minutes.

x2.

I've been extremely pleased with my decision. I'm not a gamer -- never will be. My children are 18 and 20 and the gaming part of my life has passed. I just want to sit back and enjoy movies in spectacular HD!

I've also been happy with the S300. I'm not going to miss profile 1.1 or True-HD. The S300 supports PCM and x.v. color space. For now that's more than enough. In about 18 months when the HD market settles down a bit I'll get a second HDM player and by then there will more new features and faster players. In the mean time I will enjoy the S300 until it migrates to one of the other TVs in the house. The only reason I can see for not getting the S300 is if you must have HDMI 1.3 (note: S300 is HDMI 1.2 but supports x.v.) or profile 1.1.

Default S300 firmware updates and divx

Hi,

I have a S300, just got it last week (Dec 2007).

I read on the web (from posting last summer) that there was a firmware update for this player. How can I find out what the latest version is, and how do I determine if I have it?

Also, I read today that the PS3 has been updated to support playing DivX files. Is it possible that this capability will be added to the S300 via a firmware or some kind of software update?

Any info is greatly appreciated, thanks!

I was going to go with the Samsung but I think I will begin my Blu days with this bundle. I don't have any high-end audio equipment so this is perfect for me. Sweet deal!

Side note, how do you order the latest firmware dvd from Sony's site? I read on an Amazon review that you can get it free from Sony.
