Is anyone else having trouble running the .zip for 5.50 on a 64-bit XP system? Downloaded twice now and will not extract files... Don't normally have a problem. Had to run on a 32-bit system to get it to work.

Nope, it worked smooth for me. Sorry man. I still can't play Kick-Ass though.

I just installed 5.50 with no problems on my S300 but can't play Inception. Anybody else having the same problem or know of anything I can do?

No, I installed the newest one and Inception played just fine on mine, but I have got a new blu-ray player now, and use the 300 as a back up. Sorry man.

No problem with Kick-Ass here. In fact, the only issues I've ever had were with The Twilight Zone Season One and (oddly) the previews on District 9.

I know it! It's weird, it played perfectly fine on my dad's S300, but not mine. O well. It served me well for 5 years now, it can be my bedroom player.

@ Snowball...

Wondering if you can help, did you ever get the problem with inception sorted on the S300? I have an S300 in my room which plays the special features BD, but not the disc with the film. My housemate's S350 plays both, which rules out a problem with a disc. I've got the 5.50 firmware update installed on the S300. Any thoughts?

Default Bricked BDP-300

**I searched the forum and couldn't find an answer to this, if a post already exists please point me there **

I was just updating the firmware on this Blu-Ray player and wouldn't you know the power went out half way through.

Now I have a Blu-Ray player that starts up and lets me do a factory reset but doesn't show any picture.

Is there anyway to return to the factory firmware and start again, a factory reset doesn't do that.

I popped the case off and there doesn't seem to be a reset style jumper like a PC but I'm hoping someone here has another solution. Otherwise my options are going to be send it to Sony for $120, go to Walmart and pick up a $99 Blu-ray player.

This was a freebie for the camper, so I'm happy to put in time to it, not sure about money

Thanks,

Gary

Depending on the state of your player, if it will allow it try loading the firmware again; e.g. by disc. If not, you'll have to send the player back to Sony for repair to have it fixed.

You can't kill "The Tank" that easily. I still have mine and still look for firmware updates, which may be in the final stage.

Now that I bought theater popping oil and popcorn salt, I wish I had more time for movies.

Sorry to hear about that. Based on similar experiences people have had with other BD players(ie. Samsung) when doing FW upgrades, I think your player is bricked. There have been some rare instances where they were able to reset their players, but the majority of cases, the player has become a doorstop. You may get lucky, but then again, you might be in the market for a new player.

I have a UPS on my blu-ray system. Anyone doing any firmware upgrades on ANYTHING should make sure the power has a backup. I've taken my chances doing firmware updates on PC's, and you just NEVER know.

No more firmware updates for me if I can't get a UPS. The potential failure isn't worth the risk.

As for the "bricked" blu-ray player, it will need to be returned to be reflashed. Hopefully, it doesn't cost half the price of a new player.

Default Firmware update 6.20

What Does This Do?

This utility updates the BDP-S300 firmware to version 6.20 and provides the following benefits:

Improvements over firmware version 5.90:

Improves BD-Java compatibility to enhance interactivity with some BD-ROMs.

In short, some discs now load faster and navigate their menu's faster. Other discs no longer have freezing and/or audio issues when playing. That was a problem with Wall-e before one of the older patches was released.

I've had this player when the firmware was 2.0! "The Tank" is still the champ.

I've had the BDP-S300 for several years. I can't get it to play most newer Blu-ray discs. I downloaded and installed the latest firmware update (6.20), but when I put a newer disc in, I get "Cannot play disc." It still works fine for older Blu-rays and DVD's. Any suggestions?

Sounds like Sony needs to issue a new firmware if it's only affecting newer titles. Most likely those titles have newer AACS keys that aren't supported by the older firmware.
