Well, it's still pretty darned rare, as is the opposite black crush problem seen on the Sony discs, and in both cases we've seen comments from people saying they've got no problem with how it looks (most recently with Shout's botched editions of Road House and TFTM) so what can you do?

Of course... you don't have to believe me, but faulty encoded levels can't be reversed.

Best explanation available on the subject here at Light Illusion's website.

Sure, it's not the ultimate fidelity to the source because the bit depth is effectively reduced by such an overly bright encode BUT the fix is enough of a correction so that us mere mortals (who don't have the ProRes master sitting in front of them ) are able to enjoy it without the distraction of such horribly milky blacks. And as soon as I get my Italian 4K set you can bet I'll be setting my player to PC levels to watch the other two cuts.

The things is it doesn't only affect the blacks of the image it also affects the whites who get clipped.

I can't speak for the UHD set but the standard BD set is mighty purty. It's even got reversible artwork.

The Argento cut looks great. I kinda wish I bought the UHD release now, I'm suddenly very curious about the full frame version haha!
I had a quick skim view and they looked OK to me?

Yeah they look fine it's just the blacks and highlights that are "off". The transfer looks a tad washed out. Definitely better than the Anchor Bay/Arrow transfer though.

Like I said, the bit depth goes for a burton which means it suffers at either end of the scale. But given how SDR video is a killer for clipped highlights anyway I'm happy enough with the black levels fix that I've applied to any such disc. Again, YMMV, especially when it comes to having a master source close to hand but ignorance, bliss etc.

I can't speak for the rest of the extras as I haven't looked at them yet but the restoration featurette that's included is in Italian without English subtitles. Bummer!

Here's a good example of that level problems not only lifting the blacks but clipping the whites.

Danny, I believe you. What I'm saying is that I can live with it as long as the blacks are brought into line, which is where the levels fix comes in handy.

Was it ever said anywhere why the Argento cut is the only version of the film with a new 4K transfer?

It must look better in motion because the screenshots look rough. Based off of the caps-a-holic comparison, the Anchor Bay looks better to me.

How about the audio? From what I recall, the Happinet theatrical release didn't have the original mono. What's included with this new release?

JP TC has its problems but those ghosting on the AB far outweighs them.

It does look rough but there's less DNR and no ghosting. It's not a great transfer but it's the best one out there at the moment for the theatrical & extended cuts imo. Those versions really need new transfers.

As for the audio, the mono mixes are included for all three cuts.
