I'd say the Italian 4K set is worth it as a stopgap until Rubinstein gets his head out of his ass and finally allows proper 4K restorations of the Theatrical and Cannes cuts, as well as a proper encoding of the Italian 4K remaster.

I've only seen this movie once and it's probably been 15 years?

Being that I want to rewatch it, my only options seem to be the Region Free Italian 4K UHD disc or the Region A Japanese Blu-rays, right?

Sadly all of the domestic DVDs and BDs are OOP.

That's the version I have and I watched it about 3 or 4 nights ago... It looked better than I would have expected to be honest.

I've always admired the scene when the four protags first take off in the WGON helicopter. As it ascends, there's a genius lingering shot of the Pittsburgh skyline and a skyscraper with its lights blinking out, presumably forever. Makes me levitate every time.

That said, I would very much like to revisit that scene (and the rest of Dawn) only this time sporting a fresh, clean high-definition transfer like Criterion just gave its older brother.

Yup. You can probably find a region 1 DVD for pretty cheap, but got to hunt for it.

Every single time this topic gets a bump, I'm crossing my fingers that there might be some news on a new release.

Depends on the store. Last week I was at a used store in town and saw a used copy of the divimax dvd with the shiny cover, but it was priced at $18.

Welp, I just done the dumb thing and bought this off ebay for 38 bucks. Just a minor upgrade or not, I just had to do it. The most I'd ever paid for a blu ray before this was 30 bucks.

$38 is actually a good price for this, ive seen it go for $50-$60.

Cover art is torn:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dawn-of-the...72.m2749.l2649

Honestly, it appears that the chances of this getting another release in the next decade or more is looking so slim. I doubt I will ever pay that much for a single movie again.

I hate to bring bad news, but that cover is fake. The real ones have inside art, a zombie on the left and a blu-ray logo behind the disc. Check the disc, should be silver playing surface. Also, it looks like there is something next to the DTS logo on the disc artwork, but I can't make it out. The rest of the disc art looks close but slightly off from mine. I'd be preparing to return that thing. I'll post a picture of my disc when my phone emails it to me.

Note the subtitle differences on the disc, like the extra stuff next to DTS logo, the extra line of whatever between "blu-ray disc" logo and catalog number. Spacing of everything. It looks like colors are off too, but that could just be from camera and lights. I'd be preparing to return that thing, sorry.

Will this movie get a proper blu ray release in the near future? The remake already has a collector's edition. The original should have been first.

I am not so sure. I have owned copies of both versions - one with inside art and one without. When I noticed the difference I checked the discs carefully and could see no sign that one was different from the other quality wise. Also the printing on the insert seemed professionally printed.

I picked up the one without inside art first used at a local record store. The other I found at Half Price Books. I have since passed along the one without inside art just because I preferred the extra bit. I assumed it was a later pressing.

Now I have no inside knowledge to back up this opinion, but since I actually had both in hand, watched both, and examined the cases side by side, thought I would offer my two cents.
