So I'm confused. Isn't the producer only licensing this film out for a crazy sum? Did Germany pay that sum and that's why this is coming out there and not in the United Staes?

The main disappointment is that the UHD 4k disc is no better than the Bluray. There are no English friendly extras. But with the UHD or with the Bluray only set its still worthwhile as a way to get all 3 cuts on Bluray

No it isn't.

There are plenty of Bluray and dvd releases of the movie listed on Amazon Germany but often these limited edition titles are not available from Amazon

Apparently the producer is asking big money but its logical to assume that licencing the film for a limited edition European release will be much cheaper than for the US.
I'm guessing he's beginning to realise that something is better than nothing and a US release will be here within 2 years. Any longer and the Bluray format itself might no longer be of interest to anyone looking to reissue the film

Sadly, the uncut version is banned in Germany. The amazon link shows cut editions.

This year is the 40th anniversary. There is no excuse not to do a new edition. At this point, Rupinstein should just realize that his 3D endeavor was a pointless waste, and that it's just time to finally cut his losses on it. That was, what, 5 years ago? Nobody asked to see this film in 3D in the first place, and the medium itself is going out-of-style again.

I refuse to pay scalper prices for an old sub-par Anchor Bay release, so I'm holding out on a new release.

Just realised that this new German set is from XT. They released separate mediabooks of all 3 versions a couple of years back and none were any great shakes so seems logical to assume this is those same versions milking the market ,so this new set is not as worthwhile a purchase as the Italian 4k set

I agree, he was taking the wrong lessons from Avatar and was trying to cash in on Avatar with it's 3D conversation and not everything is Avatar.

I think the only films that were huge successes because of 3D were Avatar, Alice in Wonderland, and Gravity. I think Rupinstein cited World War Z, but even that film is quite different from the original Dawn of the Dead. Even Disney and Pixar films (and Star Wars: The Phantom Menace) found niche audiences at best when they were reissued in 3D (outside The Lion King, which was back in 2011 when 3D was still a novelty).

I think that part of the problem is that it isn't his money, he raised it from investors; I don't think he has the power to unilaterally decide to cut their losses.

The 3-D version has been screened here and there, no?

I would love to see it, but I also know that there aren't enough fans out there to recoup all the money that would be invested in a theatrical run.

I'm not sure what Rubinstein's plan is. Is he wanting another company to make a bad investment to erase his own bad investment? It's not going to happen. So, at this point, wouldn't he rather have positive money coming back in?

I believe that they do handle the theatrical distribution of the film themselves, to the extent that there is any. (Midnight screenings and such.)
