Yeah, I really like seeing films at The Egyptian. Probably one of the best experiences I've had the past 20 years seeing movies in a theater was seeing the US premiere of Gamera 3 there with a packed house of hardcore fans.

I saw "Lawrence" at the Egyptian a few weeks ago, and I'm hoping to get back on Friday for Ernst Lubitsch's "Rosita". I caught nine Lubitsch movies at the Billy Wilder Theater over the summer, one more seems like a nice way to close out the year.

I was at the Aero screening of the 3D version a couple of weeks ago in Santa Monica. It had only played in LA once before (The Egyptian in 2016) and I either had tickets to dusk to dawn horrorthon at the New Beverly or it was sold out before I heard about it. So I was really excited to see this.

Certainly not sorry I went. I love this film to death and had never seen it on a big screen before, even though I've seen it at least two dozen times. That being said, the 3D was fairly anemic.

I'm not a huge 3D fan, but if there's a reason to use it or if you can design it to immerse the viewer in the world of the film, then that really enhances my enjoyment. Even something like Titanic, which Cameron retrofitted for 3D, it was like a completely new experience. I felt like I was on that ship for much of the time. Life of Pi did the same thing. So did Avatar, but the movie was so dull the 3D wore off after 20 min and I was stuck.

But knowing what Rubenstein paid for this conversion, I really had my hopes up that he had conceived a way to really make you feel part of the film. Nope. The 3D was very flat (no pun intended) and I felt like I was watching something silly like Jaws 3D (at least in terms of the gimmicky use of 3D). I was left wondering what he spent all that money on. It didn't enhance the film or my experience of watching it. Again, super happy I went because when will I get a chance to see that movie on a big screen, but I wish he would have taken the money and used it on a proper blu ray or 4K release.

After reading this point, I have to ask: Was there a new transfer of the movie for the 3D conversion? This question has been kicking around for a while and I don't think anyone has a definitive answer and I've been genuinely wondering for quite sometime about that. Another question would be whether or not the color grading has changed. From what I know, the Arrow / Anchor Bay transfer is way too warm & the more recent Italian 4K remaster of the Argento cut is noticeably cold and blue-ish in tone, whilst looking back in the original release, it's often times heavy in the color green, so I'm wondering right now what Rubenstein went for if the new transfer was made.

For live-action films that have previously been retrofitted in 3D, a new (usually 4K) master does get made (see Jurassic Park or Titanic).

For the fact Rubenstein put up $6 million to get this converted, I would assume they at least made a new 2K master at the very least. However, Rubenstein also sucks, so I'm just expecting the worst.

I'm surprised he hasn't tried to send the 3D version as a Fathom event or something similar rather than have it pop up randomly over the years.

So it was disappointing?

Man, every time I open this thread up, I'm hoping there is some news about an upcoming release of this film. Still nothing.

I'm just going to quote one of my older posts on this topic.

Let’s all start a viral go fund me page for Arrow or Criterion to get the rights to a 4K scan. They can give it the love it needs.

Crowdfunding to cover Rubinstein's fee demands would simply prove to him that he was right all along.

Agree and to have that bastard Rubinstein who is such an egotistical ******* who don't think clearly to tell him where to stick it.

Fans deserve to have this on blu-ray in 4K remastering of all cuts and Criterion needs to do justice to this movie.

Question

To the experts: Is there an edition/cut which contains the helicopter zombie scene and the Goblin soundtrack? I just bought the Romero cut on Blu-ray, while I love it, I still like to own the cut with the Goblin OST as well.

Edit: holy smokes, I just noticed that the German dub track of the Blu-ray contains the Goblin OST and the English audio track the Romero OST.

Yeah, not holding out much on this one. Any company can release this, but the only thing that matters is whether we get a new scan from ocn.
