I'm just wondering if the UK rights aren't controlled by Rubenstein? Otherwise how is Second Sight releasing this if he's asking for so much?

Like I've said many times before. We don't even know what Rubenstein's asking price is. For all we know he could have settled for a smaller amount than what he's asked for in previous years.

If that's the case, then he does own the UK rights? I'm sure Second Sight will do a great job no matter what. Still, would love to have a Criterion edition to match my Night of the Living Dead release.

Even some of the creators of social media giants candidly said themselves rarely let their kids use it due the potential negative aspects.

With the Internet and streaming enables yiy to find any movie there's overchoice meaning people will be selective, younger people will tend to opt for newer movies.

So their taste becomes built on newer movies, so anything they feel as too old they dismiss.
I love when I see a YouTube comment that's more than a couple of paragraphs, or an online article that's a full page, and people b*tch and moan about not having the time to read all that.

And people whining that there's nothing on Netflix, because movies are more than five years old. Hell, put a '70s movie up there and most kids will think it's one of those "talkies".

And don't get me started on books...

Now as far as that I do not know. But I think someone said a couple pages back that he owns worldwide rights so idk. Either way, we know Second Sight is releasing it. They even confirmed it on a Twitter post.

We just have to play the wait game and see if they announce it as Region B or region free. All we can do is wait.

This habit and attitude has been around long before social media was what it is now. I've been dealing with it for as long as I can remember. Come on bro.
Im not disagreeing with that there always gonna be exception to rule. Good point but it's much heighted now there's so much choice and distractions, younger generations will rarely branch out with much older films. So assume its not their taste but how do you truly know until you tried diffrent things.

Actually, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is pretty rich in meaning also. It's just that it operates on a more subconscious level and includes themes/commentary on the perversity/degeneration of the American middle-class family, collapse of the peace & love generation (post-Woodstock, post-Manson family), displacement from industrial capitalism, Vietnam War, etc.

Dawn of the Dead is the only one that shoves its themes in your face so hard that no one could miss it, though.

This is an assumption on your part. There are young people discovering the history of cinema everyday. Choice has been huge since the VHS and DVD and rental days; it's all merely shifted means of acquirement. Still, I say, come on bro.

Choices expanded dramatically during the days of video stores but it's a drop in the bucket compared to the media options available to people today. Video stores in and of themselves required an effort to utilize which meant people had a vested interest in ensuring that whatever product they just paid for, be it a rental or an outright purchase, was watched. With today's technology there is often no monetary requirement to find content to enjoy. With also such a low level of effort required to access said content all of it is viewed as disposable as well. His point remains very much valid. Additionally, unlike at any time in history, Film has serious competition from not only television, but also video games and the internet itself via youtube and other content creators to distract and alter ones preferences.

The only fallacy of this argument that I've seen really thus far is that it has been only today's youth that ignore films of the past. That is certainly a problem right now, but it's always been the norm as well even when choices were fewer. Yes there are always going to be the film nuts that branch out in every direction and appreciate film from every era, but if we're talking about the standard youth of any given generation, they rarely are interested in films from more than say 5 to 10 years before them.

I once had a conversation (around 2011) with a then 17 year old that loved Star Wars episodes 1-3 but hated 4-6 because "they were too old". This mindset isn't exclusive to any one generation and it's something that most everyone goes through to some degree until they grow older and a bit wiser and start expanding out beyond what has been force fed to them through pop culture and recent vicinity.

Old farts that complain about those darn kids disregarding anything made before X usually hypocritically disregard anything made AFTER X at the same time.

Looks like the pending Second Sight Blu-Ray has scored its own bare-bones "release" page:

Rubinstein has the rights to it in the UK. That is why it has been out of print since Arrow lost their rights to it around 2012.

The Rubinstein/New Amsterdam site indicates they have the rights in "USA, English Canada, United Kingdom, Australia/New Zealand, and Latin America"

This makes sense as the releases in these countries all went out of print around the same period. Other releases in Italy, Germany, Spain and Japan have stayed available as New Amsterdam do not have the rights in these countries.

Corrected: Second Sight normally region-lock their discs. The deal SS have got for DOTD may also have region-locking as a requirement.

There is also the possibility that the rights costs have become more realistic for labels and SS may just be the first of them to announce a deal. Which could mean an announcement from a US label may also be imminent/near future.

I'd say the majority of SS titles are region B locked.

Any user can add those, so unfortunately that doesn't mean anything.

Second Sight is probably cackling at how much their announcement is making everyone lose their minds. Here's hoping they give us something to go on soon!

Their last 3 big collectors editions were all Region Free. It's safe to assume that if they can afford it they will want to lock up worldwide distribution rights. Yes it's possible and perhaps slightly more likely that it will be Region B locked, but given the reaction that When a stranger Calls got which lead to it's Region Free Status and how much bigger of a reaction this is going to get, It's a safe bet that Second Sight will be doing everything in their power to release this Region Free.

With that said, will I be shocked if another studio (Shout Factory) has obtained the US rights? No, but I will be slightly disappointed.

I truly hope that's the case. I could see Criterion giving this a release or Shout! as well. I would have said Arrow as well, but since they didn't get the rights in the UK, I doubt they would only release in the US.

I hope Rubenstein has finally gotten off his high horse and this will get a release in more territories in the coming year. Would make a lot of movie fans happy. I personally consider this to be one of the all time bests films and truly shows us the human condition.

Best case scenario as a fan would be if Rubenstein agreed to license to everybody/anybody and mandated that all releases are Region Free so that the individual distributors are forced to directly compete. This would allow folks their choice in releases and also encourage elaborate editions to sway potential buyers. I'm not a huge fan of the movie but you better believe I'll be lining up for the most comprehensive package offered if given a choice.

Not to sure where the doubt comes from. Second Sight are surely intending to release this and would have to have a rights deal in place to announce it the way they did.

Seeing as Severin and Second Sight released their restored Changelings at the same time, using the same base materials for their respective editions with a few tweaks here and there, it wouldn't surprise me if a US label also piped up with some Dawn news at some point.
