I think they'd be the best fit and I wouldn't say it's impossible, but my feeling is that if Arrow could afford the US license, they would've gotten the UK license too (which is almost certainly cheaper).

Criterion seems somewhat antiquated in a market with so many smaller specialty labels... With people passionate about the movies their working on.
I think they still work for really old obscure titles, but they're not appropriate for a movie like Dawn. |

I'm glad I own a 4K set and was able to snag the Second Sight release so I never have to worry about this again. I can't wait to see this thread in ten months and people going, "BUT GEEK GAB SAID IT WAS COMING." |

They are releasing Netflix films now. Most of their recent output have been films released after Dawn. If they can release a film like Ghost Dog, then Dawn shouldn’t be a surprise.

They will likely be releasing an inferior release at a premium price for Dawn.. |

As someone who owns both the Criterion (sourced from Scorsese's 4K restoration) and Japanese Blu-ray (sourced from The Weinstein Company's 2K restoration), the Criterion release is the better in regards to picture and audio quality. The Japanese release is worth owning just to maintain all of the bonus features TWC produced (including a feature-length documentary) that didn't find their way onto the Criterion. The worst case scenario is if Criterion had its hands on Dawn is that it would be a Blu-ray only release, which isn't a bad thing considering a perfectly good 4K release exists from Second Sight. |

I think at the very least this shows how little people care about Criterion anymore. They used to be the king of labels release but they've been loosing touch with their audience for the last decade or so. It used to be people would ask for EVERY movies to get the Criterion treatment. Now, people are mostly hoping a better label picks up their favorite movies. Criterion either don't care about the changing market or think they are above it, who knows. With UHD being region free now, it's much easier to pick a better release overseas than Criterion's offerings. I am so grateful that 4K is multiregion lol. Now, if only studios could stop putting extras on a region locked blu ray, it would be wonderful. :P

Based upon Anchor Bay's Ultimate Edition release in 2004 and Second Sight's release this year, odds are any U.S. release will feature:
I still don't think Criterion or any U.S. studio has the rights. If they did, we would've heard something by now. |

A label that does do 4K would have to directly compete with Second Sight's 4K, which has already captured most people's attention by being first to market. A label would be paying a premium to sell to the limited market of "people who buy 4Ks but don't import them". But other labels might also balk at paying a premium for the Dawn license mainly for the blu when they could license other movies with similar appeal for the 4K market also (probably for less, given the stories about Rubinstein). |
