When the gummymint stimulus checks rolled in in the summer of 2020, I figured it was time to finally upgrade my TV set to 4K quality and get a UHD player. Best money I've spent since my eye surgery in 2014.

Hopefully. Part of me we might have to have an Alligator situation where the owner dies, and the family makes a deal.

Yeah. I hope that happens for Dogma (1999) as well. I'm lucky enough to own the Blu-ray but it deserves a rerelease and streaming.

Yeah, I also have the Blu-ray of that one. Not sure what the deal is, as it was with the Weinsteins, but not part of Miramax deal with Paramount? I wonder what's up.

Harvey Weinstein personally owns the movie. Not Miramax. That is most likely why it's not with Paramount now. I think. Either way it's a bad situation.

Correct, when the controversy hit before DOGMA's release, Disney (who owned Miramax at the time) wanted to cut bait on the film. So Harvey sold that film to himself and Bob, then licensed it out to Lionsgate for Theatrical (Sony had home video rights). Those rights have since lapsed, which is why the blu is out of print. If someone wants to distribute it again, they'd have to deal directly with Harvey. I don't see that happening any time soon. Kevin might be willing to work with him to regain some control, or maybe Bob can get full control from Harvey, but I don't see an outside company wanting to do it directly while he's still knee deep in his mess, unless Harvey dies and they make a deal with whomever is controlling his estate. Harvey might be willing to sell and he probably needs the money, but no one wants the stench of perhaps funding his legal expenses with a purchase on their business.

I believe there's one other film that's in the same boat, but I can't remember which other one they sold to themselves off hand.

From what I remember there were Christian protestors upset that the movie was coming out from Disney (which owned Miramax at the time), so to skirt the issue, Harvey Weinstein purchased the film from the Disney corporation and licensed it to Lionsgate. The deal with Lionsgate, which lasted about 10 years, allowed them to put the film out theatrically and home video but was never renewed, I think in part because it was around this time that Kevin Smith's relationship with the Weinsteins started to sour.

I'm sure Smith has made some inquirey about it getting out again on DVD,BD,4K,streaming etc. but with Harvey sitting in jail, I don't think a deal is forthcoming anytime soon.

A sad world we live in. At least the film is on Youtube for free.

I would guess Jersey Girl, although dvds are still cheap and easy to get. That could be because many Smith fans like myself can't stand that movie and don't want to own it.

I recall reading something about Harvey offering Dogma back to Smith, but under terms that Kevin refused. That was before the legal trouble for Harvey even started.

If I remember, Harvey called Kevin a week before the allegations got out and was using it as a power control over him. He even offered him a Dogma 2.

I don't think it was JERSEY GIRL. If I'm remembering correctly, it wasn't a Kevin Smith film.

Yeah, right before it all went down Weinstein was trying to pre-emptively get other celebrities and hollywood insiders on his side. In addition to tempting Smith with doing a Dogma sequal, he also wanted people to write open letters attesting to his supposed good nature and character... He didn't get a single one because Harvey Weinstein's repulsive nature wasn't just restricted to sexual abuse. There were also reports of him dabbling in verbal abuse (screaming at his employees) and physical abuse (throwing things at people and even putting them in headlocks).

Anyway, Dawn of the Dead is a great film and it's a crying shame that Richard Rubinstein has the rights to it because he's clearly more interested in getting paid than he is in doing right by the film or George Romero.

IIRC, Disney was very upset that Miramax released "Priest", so when "Kids" got an NC-17, Disney wasn't happy about it so the Weinsteins bought it themselves. Is that the other one you're thinking of?
