No US release will be anywhere close to as good or extensive as the UK SS release, short of new cast and crew interviews with the leads. I'd just get that one (if you don't already have it). It is pretty much a definitive release, especially the LE.

How the hell is anyone enough of a fan of this classic to hang out here and talk about it and not own either a 4K or region free player. I will NEVER understand that.

Doesn’t matter if it’s too much to ask or not. Until that guy either releases his financial death grip on his catalog or dies, it’s not even worth the aggravation of wondering if it’ll ever happen.

So if Mr Rubinstein were to release an US release it would cost far less than importing. It's also the principle. Dawn of the Dead (and Martin) should not remain locked in a vault. For those who don't buy physical they stream. Those films are not any where to be found. Ridiculous as Dawn is one of the most important zombie movies of all time and a contender for best horror films ever. Hell it's also the fact that it's so disrespectful to George. If he was still around he would be doing a he could to get these out there for everyone to see. Rubinstein is just a greedy snake. |

In a recent Panel regarding Martin, it was revealed that the 3 hour cut will not be availible outside the University it's being held. That to me says it all. He wouldn't let SS get a crack at it, and I saw rumored reports of him asking 6 figures for the distribution 3hr Martin alone. If he's asking that much for Martin, which is a FAR lesser known title than DotD, think of how much he's probably asking for it. Criterion tried, I'm sure Shout tried. Aside from a MAJOR studio getting involved, no one is going to be able to afford the US rights for either title. I'm not going to tell you how to spend, or what to get, but I can only saw that as one of the biggest Dawn fans out there, the Second Sight release is THE release. If you have a 4K player, it's already not region locked, so you're good to go, if you don't have a 4K player, maybe grab the set in hopes of getting a 4K player/xbox/ps5 in the future. I am only pushing it so hard because Dawn is a VERY special movie to me, and I want everyone even remotely interested in buying it to at least consider it. What SS did with Dawn is almost everything I could have hoped for in a release. I actually think buying the SS Martin and Dawn will end up hurting Rube, as it's less sales/sales potential for any boutique in the US to consider. So if you want to stick it to him, here's your chance. He probably still gets a cut of copies sold in the UK release, but Boutiques won't want to spend that money if folks already have the best of the best. |

I understand that it's not exactly an inexpensive release, but you're essentially holding out for a release that may very well (and very likely) never happen.
I paid out the ass for the limited Dawn of the Dead 4K, I think it cost me about $150 CAD. Definitely the most I've ever spent on a single film but IMO it was well worth it. The thing is absolutely stacked with extras, and the film looks amazing in 4K. For me, this was the be-all end-all release of Dawn and let's be real, it was expensive as hell for everyone who didn't reside in the UK, not just Canadians. And for those in the UK, it wasn't exactly cheap either. And I honestly don't think Romero would be able to do anything, even if he were still alive. Rubinstein is the rightsholder, he has the final say. Yes he's a dick and a greedy snake, I completely agree, but it is what it is. Also I'm not sure how interested many US labels would be considering not only the cost to license the title, but coupled with the fact that most fans who love the film likely already bought the SS release so it's limited its market appeal. |

Agreed, 100%. Maintaining a death grip on Dawn and Martin when the physical media market is contracting is a terrible idea.

The Dawn of the Dead standard edition 4K is $42.99 on Orbit. That's about as much as a Scream Factory 4K re-release. The special feature blu-rays are locked, but all the cuts of the film itself are 4K region free. No excuse at all. If you care about that movie you need it. Period.
I got the big LE edition as soon as it went up and would never part with it. An absolute must have release. |

I really want to see that 3 hour black-and-white cut of Martin, and hopefully it will be released in some form sooner than later. There’s really no reason not to release it. The film is pretty obscure, and no label or studio is going to pay close to 6 figures for it. Honestly, if Rupinstein really is holding it for such a ransom, I almost hope it just leaks on the internet.
As for Dawn, I might get the SS release before too long since I own a 4K player, but I’d be bummed to miss out on the bonus features since I’m not region free (and I’m not buying such a player for that one disc). That’s one reason why I’m sorta kinda holding out on a US release. If a label were to license the film, I don’t see why they wouldn’t release a 4K. Dawn is a major title, and while most hardcore collector fans already have the SS, I’m sure there’s a massive chunk that don’t. I can’t see it not selling well for whoever gets it. Also, Rupinstein’s BS is keeping the film from being available to a casual, mainstream audience via streaming, etc, and being discovered by a new audience. That’s even worse than the disc situation IMO. Honestly, I don’t think he’s a malicious person. He’s probably just ignorant more than anything else, like Susan Hart and Wade Williams. |
