Someone made an English version. Just do a google search for Extended Mall Hours Cut.

I could be wrong, but I believe the German 156 minute cut is not an official release. There is a fan edit called "The Extended Mall Hours Cut" which is the same length. It's footage of all three cuts of the film spliced together.

Edit: It's on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ba7i...ature=youtu.be

I'm fairly confused why Anchor Bay released such a lazy blu-ray? They could have easily ported over all those extras from the 4-disc edition.

They were operating under Starz at that time. Blu-ray was in its infancy. I believe the HD-DVD war was still in effect. Starz never seemed as interested in classic horror the way Anchor Bay was.

Looks like DOTD was open matted for two of it's home DVD releases
http://sd.caps-a-holic.com/vergleich.php?vergleichID=34 (DE LP)
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/comparisons...ad/default.htm (More shots of the DE Red Edition)
http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCom...nofthedead.htm (Argento Cut of the NL Dutch DVD)
Found it interesting, and both are the Argento cut. Video quality is pretty damn bad on them though.

Dawn Of The Dead was definitely shot open matte. The first two British DVDs (Director's Cut) were 1.33 with no missing information on both right and left side.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that most film is shot "open matte". In other words, most film is shot utilizing the full frame. When projected, however, the information outside of the intended theatrical aspect ratio is matted out.

So, the British DVD's you refer to were incorrectly presented open matte when they should have been matted for widescreen.

A film can be shot on 2-perf (2.35), 3-perf (1.85), 4-perf (1.33 or 2.35 Anamorphic). With 2-perf you get twice the frames on a reel compared to 4-perf for almost the same price. It's kind of stupid to pay for 4-perf film and end up matting it to 2.35 or 1.85. I'm talking 35mm here.

It was initially so they didn't have to change all the camera, editing and projection equipment I guess! Then it stuck around likely because it allowed "open" TV editions.

3-perf seemed to become dominant in the 90s finally after a very low take-up since, what, the 1970s when it first came into use but was all but ignored?

So is the transfer on the Euro Cut disc on the Japanese set the same as the one on the European blu-ray discs? I was kinda eyeing the French "Zombie" release for completionism.
