The Extended Cut on Blu-ray being only available in Austria and Japan and I'm pretty sure the Austrian XT release is using the same encode found on the Happinet Blu-ray.

Got ahold of the full 8gb Extended Mall Hours fan edit with the help of Danny, and yeah, the video and audio are pretty bad.
The bitrate on the video isn't bad, but I'm taking a guess that the sources for this project were from the 2004 UE DVDs, meaning three SD sources were rendered to a source that I'm assuming was SD (this was 2008 after all), then transcoded again to a MPEG-2 DVD. Looks like a YouTube video at this point.
On the audio end, 192kb/s Dolby Digital, which is very low even for 1.0 Mono mixed to 2.0 stereo. Plopping a VOB from later in the film into Audacity for a 8 minute clip shows it only peaks at around -7db, and features pretty much no frequencies above 11-12khz

If I were to do a project like this using HD sources of today, I'd go with these:
Theatrical Cut - Arrow BD
Euro Cut - Happinet BD
Extended Cut - Happinet BD (fix RGB levels and re-color grade it in editing)

I just went through many little corrections and optimizations in the --RELEASES-- section in order to make it easier to understand the differences between releases.

Have they freshly re-scanned the elements to create the new 3D version?

I've no interest in a 3D re-working, but presumably there'd be a lot of legs in a new 2D version from a fresh scan, if they've done that.

Nobody knows, I hope so as it would be kind of impossible to do a stereoscopic conversion to the Theatrical Cut of Dawn of the Dead using either the 2004 Anchor Bay's transfer or the 2013 Happinet transfer as the 35mm CRI from which they were transferred is too shitty. I worked on the stereoscopic conversion for Superman Returns and can tell you really need a good source to start with. It took a while but I believe Rubinstein finally understood that the 35mm CRI couldn't be used anymore in the HD world as we now clearly see how shitty it is. I mean, these artifacts appear all the time on the 35mm CRI and it's so severe to the point it can be addressed digitally unless you do like Anchor Bay did back in 2004 doing some frame blending and end up with a pile of crap.

Something tells me this is why it takes so long to be released. They probably had to do a 4K restoration from the Original Camera Negative first.

I think they'd probably sell (at least) as many to people who wanted to view a decent-looking version in 2D as to those who wanted it for the 3D...erm...'upgrade'.

I don't own that edition but I can tell you that it's the complete European Cut (Argento's Cut). I am also certain that you can remove the subtitles on both the French and English track. If I were you I would rather go with the Distribution Sony Pictures Home Entertainment edition as it comes with the Theatrical Cut (in SD) as well as Document of the Dead.

Here's the back cover for the Filmedia / Seven7 release.

Danny, just so's you know, that other edition of Zombie that you linked to has FORCED French subs. There's no mono mix and the audio is lossy DTS 5.1 (though the SD theatrical has DD 2.0 mono, forced subs there too).

I'm talking about 2 releases in my previous post. Which one has forced French subs?

A - 2009 Distribution Sony Pictures Home Entertainment

B - 2013 Filmedia / Seven7

I've also got the 2009 disc right here. The subs are forced whenever I play it back on my Panasonic and Sony Blu-ray players in the house.

And by "forced" I mean "forced", I can't turn them off, not via the menu and not manually via remote. DVD Compare also backs this up, FWIW: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparison...hp?fid=11797#4

Also referenced on this forum's own forced French subs list: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=192986

That's weird, they're not forced on mine. I'm watching it with MPC-HC and even tried with Power DVD 13 and no forced subtitles at all.
