Personally I don't care what the cover says or who presents what. Just gimme Dawn remastered in 4K on a UHD disc and I'm good.

He's hardly unknown. Virtually anyone interested in modern non-mainstream cinema knows who he is. It's sort of dumb, but if he co-funded the release and that's what it takes to get it out there, great. It's no different than all those films they stuck Guillermo Del Toro's name on over the last several years.

(well, except Guillermo Del Toro is awesome and has a very, very well known love of horror flicks, and Nicolas Winding Refn is VERY hit or miss)

:P

I feel like at some point during the DVD boom there were a ton of kung fu movies with Method Man or someone's name on them, and like there were a lot of cult flicks with Quentin Tarantino's name on them.

Refn was asked by Argento and company to present the restoration. He very likely helped fund it as well. Also anyone calling him an unknown doesn't know what they're talking about.

I'm guessing that "unknown" was bensunt's badly worded way of slamming the cover. I liked his comment for that.

(And I'm a fan of Winding Refn)

Considering he started out the sentence by saying "awful cover", he didn't need anything else to support that opinion, especially not some cheap shot at Refn.

Hurl insults at me if you want, but I kind of love that cover art. Neon colors against a black background is often an attractive combination to me.

This is a 6 disc set btw, the UHD, and 5 BD's. So presumably this has a bunch of cuts included, no?

Excellent . I've actually never seen Zombi, so I'll very likely be picking this one up.

WTF is that? Jason's mask dipped in Prego sauce? and WTF does it have to do with Dawn '78?

The attached is from Tom Savini via Twitter a couple months ago. Apparently it was done extremely well, over 2 years and at a cost of $6 million (according to Richard Rubenstein).

Currently playing theatrically in Europe. No word yet on the BD release date. I'd assume that whenever it is released on disc stateside, a 4K version would be piggy-backed on it. My guess is that the flat 2D version you're discussing will just be the 2 hr, 6 min version since the new scan was probably done just for the conversion purposes. And, given the cost of the conversion, I doubt they'd spend even more money just for extended editions.

Rubenstein has been trying to get this done since 2007! So he's happy to have finally achieved his goal. From an interview a couple years back:
“It is proving to be more 3D-friendly than many films, because George’s style was to compose within the frame, rather than across frames,” Rubenstein said. “That means there is a lot of action within each frame, from front to back, and it makes the conversion process more friendly. It’s like you’re moving the audience closer to the movie. What I didn’t want to do is not edit anything George did in his original movie, and nothing has been altered in this process,”

Huh? This Italian edition is a completely separate restoration of the IP of the Argento cut.

That's one of the ugliest movie poster I have ever seen. It's an abortion. Especially for such a legendary classic as DOTD.

Here's the standard edition, which is still 4 BDs.
