Before the shit hits the fan...
I haven't received my set yet so I can't confirm this at 100% but according to some screenshots that surface today, it sadly looks like Midnight Factory did messed up the restoration work that was done by LVR on the 4K restoration of the European Cut of Dawn of the Dead by screwing up the encode. Usually, when an encoding is done properly, you can't tell the difference between the ProRes 4444 and the x264 and I'm talking texture and colors here. But right now, when I compare the original ProRes 4444 with the screenshots I was provided earlier today that supposedly come from Midnight Factory's blu-ray, I can only come up with the conclusion that they did screwed up the encoding as the texture is quite different and the gamma has also been altered making the image a little less contrasty. So please, keep in mind that the encoding on this release doesn't reflect the restoration work that was done prior to the encoding and that the people who are the most pissed off about this are the ones who dedicated MANY MANY hours restoring our / your favorite flick and that includes me. These are supposed to be two consecutive frames from Midnight Factory's blu-ray. The first frame is noisy when there's no noise on the ProRes 4444 master itself and the second frame is softer (about 30%) when the ProRes 444 is not. http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/191409 Now let's hope an other label will step in and release it the way it should be. I'm pissed more than all of you together. EDIT: I received my set and can confirm the encoding is not that good. Last edited by 2-perf; 11-25-2016 at 05:28 PM. |

Danny, I get that you've already qualified your complaint by saying that encodes don't usually look any different from the master but still: you've been looking at high-quality master files day in day out so I'm not surprised that any changes on the lossy compression (turning a 500 Mb/s 4:4:4 source into, say, a 35 Mb/s 4:2:0 encode) are sticking out like the sorest of thumbs, even though it still looks delicious to us mere mortals.
All things considered, given what we've had for Dawn over the years, I'd still take the second pic every day of the week and twice on Sundays and the first grab is even better, it looks thoroughly filmic (in terms of blu-ray, not studio masters) to me. Perhaps the first one is an I-frame which is why there's a slight difference in texture to the next one? And in any case the 'noise' has the classic yellow/blue mottling that usually indicates film grain. I'm still dying to see this up and running!! |

There should be grain even when the content of the frame is soft just like the screenshot below. ![]() Last edited by 2-perf; 11-22-2016 at 10:02 PM. |

I'm sure the Blu-ray looks great, because the Divimax Anchor Bay DVD I have of this title looks wickedly clean and sharp (I won't double dip on this, though, because I'm actually more of a fan of the remake).

For most people it's gonna be just fine. For the die-hard fan, they're will be complains about the encoding. In any case, this is the best looking version of Dawn of the Dead on the market, and by far.
