Can't agree with the Vampires detractors. It's not top-tier Carpenter but it's still a fun action/horror movie and probably the closest the great man ever came to directing a true western.

I think it's a really strong lineup - two good Bronson films (and in time for my birthday, too), a Takakura Ken movie (there are far too few of them in English-friendly versions), two of Jackie Chan's very best and most enjoyable, the much-better-than-its-reputation original version of The Quiet American (yes, they changed the ending into a travesty, but it's a much better made and acted film than the remake), Inferno in 3D (and TT's 3D releases have all been great) and the shock and awe of The Bridge at Remagen (admittedly a film whose astonishing behind the scenes story is more interesting than what happened onscreen, but still genuinely spectacular).
It's certainly a bit testosterone heavy aside from The Man in the Moon, but my inner caveman approves. |

![]() ![]() I watched Tony Rome last night for the first time and LOVED it. Wasting no time in getting going, Tony Rome packs more words and action into its 110 minute run-time than many films of its era. Sean Connery Bond films excepted, this has to be one of the most non-PC 1960s films I have ever seen. A crime thriller sporting noir underpinnings, with Frank Sinatra as the titular private detective, TR mixes in elements of camp and sexual humor (including one scene where you could make a drinking game out of every time the p-word is used to describe a cat), lots of testosterone fueled dialogue, Sinatra casually butt-patting bikini-clad babes, boozing, a gambling addiction, we-don't-need-no-stinking-warrant break-ins, more boozing, drugs, strippers, lesbians, stolen gems, promiscuous redheads, some blazing gun action, a couple of beat-downs, hoods and thugs......and everyone smokes. Throw in the time capsule setting of mid-1960s Miami, lots of classic cars, boats, suits, fedoras, a cameo by boxing legend Rocky Graziano, an energetic theme song sung by Nancy Sinatra, and what you get is a tasty brew that I could drink all day. I can't wait to watch the second film Lady in Cement, especially since it also stars Raquel Welch. The more I watch Sinatra, the more I am sold on him as one of my favorite actors. He chose his projects well, starring in some of the most critically acclaimed films at the top of my best movies list as well as hugely enjoyable action-oriented guy films that I can watch over and over again. I thought I read in here a while back, that TT has the rights to The Seventh Sign 1987.
Anyone know if that's true? With their releases announced through May, it has now been a calendar year since Australia released a region free version of SS. All things being equal (even with the Oz version being a little cheaper) I would prefer to get this title from Twilight Time, but I'm getting impatient. Thus the inquiry. I know folks in here can't exactly know things like this with any certainty. Just wanting to remember what the rumour was. In the old days I'd just buy them both without regrets, but things have gotten tighter in recent years. |

If you're interested in some background info on how he chose his parts, read Gay Talese's classic work of New Journalism, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold. It's not a major part of the essay, but it has some interesting details about the guy who filtered his scripts. It's a great piece and entirely worthy of a read for any Sinatra fan. |

I've watched TONY ROME on dvd twice. I think Sinatra's THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is his best movie that I've seen. The best thing about TONY ROME is Jill St. John when she was in her prime.

Tony Rome/Lady in Cement has been sitting in my still-unwatched stack, but I was thinking about putting it on the priority list after watching Raquel Welch in One Million Years B.C. this past weekend. The above review reinforces my desire to see both movies.
Jill St. John is quite gorgeous in Diamonds Are Forever, although that film as a whole is on the lowest tier of James Bond 007 movies. |
