The pain got so bad on Sunday, however, that I finally checked myself into a nearby ER, expecting that the family curse of kidney stones had found me at last.

A CT scan revealed, instead, that I had an appendix inflammation and a high white blood cell count. Three hours later, the surgery revealed that my appendix had actually burst and that I was deathly infected. I've spent the past three days in the ninth circle of hell, with bloating due to total malfunction of the bowel system, a tube going down my nose to drain fluid out of my stomach, IV drips, shots to the stomach, etc.

I'm over the hump now, but it sucks. I have not had surgery since 1981, when I was in fourth grade, so this whole feeling of being in mortal danger and helpless to perform minor tasks, is new to me.

I'll be home soon, though, and I'll order the March TT titles.
Glad your OK, my wife just went through the same thing, they had to do the full side cut on her.

Get well soon, Great One.

I went to the ER last year to see what was causing me to feel inexplicably weak. What followed became a seven month odyssey of two surgeries and two illnesses. Now, after those 7 months, I'm back to about 95% of normal.

I certainly hope that your recovery period is faster than mine!

I hadn't had (non dental) surgery since having my tonsils out back in 1959.

My 1st time getting wind of this as well Owl. Glad you are on the road to recovery. I have been there and done that with surgery, the nose tube, and the whole 9 yards. An absolute freaking 9th circle of Hell nightmare. Hang in there.

If you're interested in films from the 1950s, or even just films that feature complex female leads, you can't go wrong with The Best of Everything (1959). I watched it recently, and it honestly puts a lot of contemporary movies to shame with its focus on multiple, fully realized female characters and their relationships with each other. Hope Lange delivers a standout performance in the central role (although the film is truly an ensemble piece), and the rest of the cast, especially Joan Crawford, shade their characters with nuanced layers of personality, resulting in meaningful character arcs. The subdued, quietly optimistic ending feels surprisingly contemporary as well. JMK gave the release a 3.5 on this site's review; I personally rank it at a solid 4.25/5.

If you haven't picked up it yet, I encourage you to grab it now or during the next sale. Based solely on its quality, it should have sold out long ago.

Great Owl, like the others have said, I'm really sorry to hear that you were so seriously ill. But I'm also relieved to hear that you did get yourself to the ER so that they could find out what was wrong with you and deal with it in a timely fashion. I've heard too many sad stories about people who were sick but waited too long to take it seriously.

Glad to have you back here. You're a big part of what makes this thread so enjoyable to read.

Glad you checked yourself into the ER. Really glad they found there was something wrong and took immediate action. Not good to have a runaway infection in your gut. Stay on your meds my friend.

Thanks so much, everyone!

I haven't been posting much while in the hospital room, because I only brought an iPhone with me, and I have a short threshold for writing posts by pecking away at letters on a phone screen.

It's a wasted opportunity, because it would probably be amusing to try and write a full movie review right after I've been given my round of narcotics, just to see how it stacks up to my normal sober review style.

I'm stuck with AMC showings of Young Guns, Rambo, Open Range, Conan the Destroyer, and such that happen to be on the hospital television when I'm relaxed and coherent enough to watch them.

Thanks again for everything. I joke that I love the "Alcoholics Anonymous" vibe of Blu-ray.com, where we don't actually know one another, but nonetheless relate to one another in great ways. In this instance, I feel the online equivalent of like-minded good people who have my back, just like Charles Bronson's character in Hard Times (a TT disc) is the friend whom everyone wishes to have. I'm grateful of that positivity from afar right now on my fifth day in the hospital. Family and offline friends have stopped by to visit, but they don't quite get the anguish of being away from a collection and a routine for involuntary reasons, while y'all do.

I think this should be the first title you review when you get back home:

I'm totally watching my Scream Blu-ray of Misery this weekend, though.

Possibly Aliens as well. I've always thought of myself as a tough guy, but I had several panicked Hudson reactions (Game over, man! Game over!) in front of the nurses when they were putting tubes in and out of my stomach and nose.

I was thinking the same thing! Especially considering the huge number of people that die every year from iatrogenic effects caused by their doctors. Though it sounds like the hospital Owl is at is way more professional than the hospital and its incompetent doctors that are portrayed in this film.

Hope you're doing better, Owl. I enjoy reading your reviews and this place wouldn't be the same without you.
