It's mainly Kino's typically brighter gamma IMO, but either way the UK is superior. Not enough for me to buy it again though.

It's not just the brightness. The grain is much tighter on the UK release.

It is, I just think the main difference is gamma. If the Kino had the same darker gamma I think the grain difference wouldn't be as obvious. I agree the UK is better.

I noticed that the US and U.K. release of Ripper Street use different frame rates. Would it be more likely to properly be 1080/50i given that it is a British series. I know that was the consensus with The Night Manger.

FWIW I finally "gave up": Hennen Rennen (the German release of Chicken Run) arrived today. (Now former studio head) Brad Grey's ouster at Paramount has me thinking that we're just not going to see significant catalog releases (including many of the Dreamworks titles) from Par or even a tantalizing UHD slate.

The new German release of Malcolm X looks better to my eyes but I might be crazy. Back of the case lists the disc as all region, I might have to take the plunge and order a copy.

I am not convinced. Some of the captures look better for the DE disc while others look better for the US disc. It's certainly not worth importing if you own the US disc already. Plus, the digibook is a thing of beauty.
