I did ask before but has anyone got any thoughts about Bone Tomahawk? I thought the UK PQ was pretty awful to be honest and I am wondering what the US PQ looks like. I'm ignoring the 'review' on this site as I suspect it may be nonsense

I thought the US disc looked good. I'd give it a 8/10 for PQ.

Thanks Goof. The UK just looked so soft and blurry I couldn't understand it. Especially with the many desert scenes - should look great?!

It's the same master and even the same encode, so PQ at least (and maybe AQ) is 100% identical.

It is not the same encode. From looking at the caps both have advantages over the other:

The US release is certainly the weakest when it comes to compression. I wouldn't classify the UK release as featuring the best PQ, the compression isn't as good as Thief, which destroys the US and DE releases in terms of compression. That FR release of Body Double is pretty darn good.

My bad. Since David Mackenzie encoded both, I thought he did like for Touch of Zen and re used his first work for the 2nd label.

Yeah, I just found out that David M did the FR release as well, but they are separate encodes.

What do you mean? The UK disc of Body Double is easily better for PQ than the US, FR, and DE discs.

The bottom three links are from Thief.

The French release of Body Double has less artifacting in the grain structure. The US, UK and FR releases come from the same source and the compression differences are slight, and not enough to justify one as being the outright best, which is why I brought up Thief, as the differences in compression can clearly be seen.

If one was being picky, then I would rate them from best to worst as follows; FR then UK then US.

Good spot there HD, the UK does look like it has more refined grain there. Either way though I think the main thing to get across to people is to avoid the US release.

Is there another Blu-ray coming out of that? I was only aware of the UK Blu-ray from 88 Films.

You could also probably add The Name of the Rose on the list. The French "Le Nom de la Rose" Blu-ray, which has English audio, has a far better transfer than the US Blu-ray. It has forced French subtitles, but they can be removed with AnyDVD.

AFAIK the UK BD is the only one available.

You are right. I was just looking at the caps and the FR disc does look marginally better than the US disc. It also helps that the US disc is now OOP.
