At Bill Hun't latest post - just up now - you can read the full transcript of what Stringer said regarding Blu and Hd and "stalemate"

Good read.
Stringer really didn't say anything we didn't already know.... Its ashame that this format war is a direct result of Hubris, I would have much rather had a unified format where I could get all of my movies on one format.... I'm sure Toshiba just wanted to maintain royalties of some sort.... But until that time, I shall remain true to Blue... |

IMHO, The most sgnificant comment Stringer made...
"Oddly, the studios kind of liked it (i.e. the format war)for a while. They were able to leverage one of us against each other. But in the end, it's counterproductive." I just get this sense that it was "fun" for a while, but Hollywood is now starting to realize the danger inherent in two formats going forward. EVERYONE (us, retailers, studios, CEs) could lose out. I hope the retailers are getting sick of the format war too. I expect that by the middle of next year, some studio decisions and bold retailer decisions will be made re: moving to one format. |

That's why I said middle of next year in my original post.
Make no mistake about it though. At least a few of the studios have talked about seeing whether cheap HD DVD hardware this 4Q would make a difference in terms of software sales. We won't see that impact until early next year, if at all. I think April/May of next year is going to be interesting... |

This is very interesting. In Japanese culture it is very important to "save face". Mr. Stringer alludes to the Paramount payoff and the sale of HD players for $99 as an attempt to save face by Toshiba. The statements of the studios initially liking the idea of Sony and Toshiba facing off, an initital agreement should have taken place, and the statement of "it dosen't mean all that" appear to open the door for Toshiba to "save face" and reach an agreement. Humm I wonder what is really going on

When are Toshiba's "next gen" players supposed to be released. If there is any more sell off of inventory, I'd think something is going on. I still think something is going on. Universal is being VERY quiet and now it is Paramount justifying their "position".
The stalemate comment seemed more in regards to studio support in light of the Paramount bribe. Things were heading to a forgone conclusion and Paramount's taking of the bribe, continued the two format "stalemate". |

Not sure how to take the Ron Sanders comment. Is he a great guy and that he is not trying to bring the hammer down on HD-DVD? It also seems like all of Warner is ready to go Blu. Universal is taking a more serious look at going, at least, neutral this time.

As far as Universal is concerned, they won't be neutral yet. But they are obviously preparing for at least one scenario... |
