Yeah, I was wondering through the local Barnes & Noble perusing their selection before the fabled 50% off sale and it stood out, I wasn’t sure if anyone mentioned it.

Interesting packaging. I don't like the entire thing about having discs stack on top of another since my experience with having one (Branded to Kill 4K UHD) had left some scratches even before I opened it. It also seems like they're just gonna put the booklet smack in between the two sides since there isn't a spot to hold it (?)

Considering the BFI will likely be encoded by FiM and that any Criterion exclusive supplements will be available on the Criterion Channel there’s probably little point in waiting unless you’re a Criterion brand fetishist.

With the hundreds of Japanese and Chinese films Criterion has, I'm thinking they really should pull an Imprint and create an Asian film line at this point.
The more time goes by between Asian releases from Criterion the more I think that Asians are just not a "trendy" minority enough for the label these days. I also think they should have a sub label for these and start putting them out already! I mean, the Zhang Yimou and Gong Li box set from Imprint is one of the best sets I own.

Yeah the booklet just floats in the middle. It's such a cheap move by Criterion.

With the Asian cinema idea, I would rather want an Eclipse Blu-ray line dedicated to the Asian/Cult films that Criterion has no interest in giving a typical Criterion treatment for.

There are tons of Japanese films for example (Gosha, Itami, Oshima, etc.) that they own with solid HD transfers/remasters on their channel that they could easily release on Blu-ray but have no interest in doing special features for. Sure, most of them aren't recently restored in 2K/4K but we need to keep in mind that many people don't care about these kinds of movies getting restorations (Not enough demand, to put it in more direct terms). I could understand that some of those films don't need special features.

They clearly have more titles that they're holding onto that they will never have the chance to release in their main line. Also, I strongly believe that Criterion really dedicates themselves to only releasing critically acclaimed or historically significant films. And a lot of the random films they own wouldn't really fit both of those ideas. I think Criterion would benefit by releasing a lot of cult, fun movies like Riki-Oh or Miracles, even if they aren't as historically or culturally significant compared to Kurosawa or Bergman. With that said, I do believe that Criterion has been moving towards this direction with some of their recent HK releases so I'm only hoping this will continue for them.

Although at the same time, I would think this will greatly affect the Criterion monthly announcements since the main line, Janus Contemporaries, and Eclipse are all being handled by this one company that isn't able to shell out as much releases as a major film company can. Plus, that Eclipse line has probably been retired at this point since Criterion has started to move away from DVDs and set their places in the 4K UHD market more.

On the other hand, all of these are on the Criterion Channel, which would also be a selling point for why users like me still would subscribe to them. I stopped subscribing to their service earlier this year but will be coming back sometime this month. Their inclusions of mainstream films like Showgirls and Dark City is also a smart idea for them while occasionally balancing it out with some rarities from directors like Isabel Sandoval and Robert Bresson.

The sale ends 12/4, and that one, along with Blast of Silence comes out the 5th, so yeah, just missed it.

Amazon is so shady man. I wanted to order the Jacques Demy set and so I was checking prices yesterday. It was 50% off yesterday on Amazon, but because B&N doesn't have it in stock and their sale is going on now, it went down to 30% between midnight last night and this morning.

Guess I'll put my B&N order in and wait till next month for it to go back down. I've seen it at 50% off a couple times before so yeah, it's really my fault. But it still pisses me off.

It's because they don't want to give you a good deal. They just want you to stop buying from other companies, forcing them out of business. If the other companies don't have stock or a sale, then Amazon won't help you either... Sigh...

I'm looking for some neo-noir recommendations. I can't even remember everything I have from Criterion, but off the top of my head: The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Blood Simple, Thief, Millers Crossing are some of the neo-noirs I've got.

I remember many years ago for a number of sales if I stayed up and waiting for the 3am or whatever price switch their internal system had 50 off preorders as well. And I'd snag them. And then by morning they would be altered again. But that was cool.
