Frances Ha and Tokyo Story for the win.

The Squid and the Whale is fantastic!

Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo
Zatoichi's Conspiracy
Zatoichi the Outlaw

I really liked them all, but my favorite is Zatoichi Meets Yojimbo. Perhaps because it stars Mifune, but also I just enjoyed the story more than the others Mifune's character is similar to what you see in Kurosawa's Yojimbo and Sanjuro. It was certainly riding on its coattails as you can see from the title.

The Zatoichi movies I've seen all have a very similar feel to them, so I think you'd be safe watching any of them. They're a bit campy/silly at times, and aren't meant to be taken too seriously.
Thanks! My wife loves Mifune, so actually that would be a good selling point! Will see if I can get my hands on that one...

I appreciate that they were attempting to recreate the lurid/bold style of a Spillane paperback, but in that case they should have used/created an illustration, not a publicity still.

So, it looks like all Criterion releases will be BD/DVD combos from here on out. I don't like the doubled width that box sets will now presumably be saddled with (I'm hoping they can find a way around that), but as long as the price stays the same, it's, as Marlowe (or at least Elliot Gould) would say, okay with me.

No problem. Several of them are available on Hulu.com for streaming (not Z meets Yojimbo though).

There you are...

I don't see myself watching Tokyo Story often, it's an eventual buy, but definitely a buy.

Haven't seen City Lights, I suppose I might have to someday..lots of love on here for that.

Frances Ha sounds like a film centered around someone without huge problems that acts like they have huge problems, which I can't stand (hope you tell me I'm wrong)

Great announcements as far as I'm concerned. Unexpected titles for the month.

What I'm a bit confused on are the pics of Zatoichi. The cover image looks Blu-ray box set sized. The set pics look a little larger than CD size.

I really hope the set is the size of their other Blu-ray box sets, though thicker of course.

So now all new Criterions will be combo packs or BD/DVD in each side of the disc?

The ones you listed and Macbeth are the only ones they COULD release.... Those and maybe 'What?'
Actually Oliver Twist is Sony in the US, and Death and The Maiden and Bitter Moon are New Line (so Warners), while The Ninth Gate is Lionsgate.

Still, I agree none of them seem likely for Criterion treatment.

Default Criterion Collection Discussion

I'm very glad that they are releasing City Lights before The Kid or other Chaplins. I just saw City Lights at an art house theater two weeks ago. It's my favorite Chaplin film.

I think Frances' problems ARE big. So yeah, you're wrong

Yeah, Tokyo Story is one of the greatest films ever made, maybe top ten, I can't wait to own it. It may only get viewed once a year, but it is an absolute essential.

Just City Lights for me. Glad it's finally set for release, but disappointed that Criterion caved to the combo pack crap. If I wanted a DVD I'd buy it. It's such a waste. I'd be really peeved if prices went up too, hopefully it doesn't eventually come to that.

That Zatoichi set is really impressive too.
