One of the most difficult oeuvres to rank. For me, it would most likely be:

1. Days of Heaven
2. The Tree of Life
3. The New World
4. The Thin Red Line
5. To The Wonder
6. Badlands

Not a single bad'un in the bunch, though.

Default A Very Merry Christmas!

I cleaned up this year! Taking advantage of the B&N sale and cashing in on membership and coupon discounts, my beautiful wife bought for me the following blu-rays:

East of Eden,
Rebel without a Cause,
The Right Stuff,
A Streetcar Named Desire
for $11.23 each,
The Big Parade for $12.94,
Dr. Zhivago,
Oldboy
for $14.15 each,
and
Looney Tunes Platinum Collection: Volume One for $24.26.

A big part of the gift was that she saved over $150!!!

A very merry Christmas to all!!!

Added the Nikkatsu Noir set to the haul from my mother in-law and a cool book on Hammer Films.

No Criterion titles under my tree this year, but I did get the Olivier Assayas book edited by Kent Jones.

The New World: Plot Summary

Pacing, hands behind back, contemplating
Pace, pace, contemplating.
Camera shows us a bird in a tree.
Oh, wait….A voiceover. It sounds like philosophy.
More pacing, more contemplating. Yes, it is definitely philosophy.
Pocahontas prancing in the fields….I’m a deer! I’m a deer!
Colin Farrell as John Smith, posing for the cover of 17th Century GQ magazine.
Pocahontas: "Is that a dirk in your codpiece, sir, or are you just happy to see me?"
More philosophy.
Indians living happily in Utopia until ugly English arrive.
Except Colin Farrell, who is Irish playing an Englishman and isn’t ugly
Colin Farrell gets mud on his pants.
Colin Farrell stares into the distance, contemplating.
Birds and other animals. Trees, grass.
Insert random shot of crazy-ass colonist babbling incoherently.
Colin Farrell leaves. Pocahontas is sad.
Indians attack! They got tired of all the philosophy.
Oh, wait…..now back to pacing. Contemplating.
More philosophy. More nature.
Christian Bale comes a courtin’. He is a master pacer and contemplater.
Pocahontas admires the cut of his pacing pants. Colin who?
Let’s all go to Merry Olde England and Party like ‘tis 1616.
Colin Farrell returns. Run away! Run away! Just say no to bad actors.
Beautiful cinematography. Light through windows. London fog.
A bit of final pacing and philosophy. Movie ends. It’s sad.
Chair sitting ass-endurance test is over! Happy Happy Happy.
Prancing in living room. Time to watch Badlands.

I love the film but found that very funny nevertheless.

Tried to get "Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion" yesterday which showed in stock but it could not be found. Oh well, next time. I did get "Marketa Lazarova" and finally Judas Priest - Epitaph for a nice sub-$12.00 price. (No, thank you, I do not need a gift receipt -- one can be interested in both Czech cinema and Judas Priest.)

Mele Kalikimaka!! Have a safe one.

3. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (own)
4. The Social Network
5. Fight Club

Not Alien³?

[i]Hopefully, I can catch Panic Room, Zodiac, and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on tv soon. Although, I wasn't a big fan of the original Swedish version of TGWTDT, so I'm not in a big hurry to see the remake.
I'm a moderately big fan of the original Swedish film trilogy (and a very big fan of Steig Larsson's novels), and I actually like Fincher's version of Dragon Tattoo better than the original.

Only one Criterion in my Christmas haul: Eyes Without a Face. But I've got gift cards burning a hole in my pocket.

Since Warner has just released a 30th Anniversary Edition just last month (after having released it previously on Blu-ray five years ago), that's not a likely one.

But, yes, there is already one out that you missed: Arnaud Desplechin's A Christmas Tale. If you want to go back to the days of yore, they released It's a Wonderful Life on laserdisc.

I will definitely catch Fincher's version of TGWTDT as soon as I can then. Also, I have seen Alien^3 before, but it was a long time ago. I need to see it again before I compare it to Fincher's other films. Although, I'm beginning to think you were being sarcastic about including that film in my top 5.
