You can see an example of this at Amazon.ca for the digibook of All Quiet On The Western Front, which when searched for takes you to a $17.99 version from a third-party seller who fulfills through Amazon, while Amazon.ca's own version is priced at $28.57.
Damn, thanks for that. Yeah, amazon did have them for a whole 15 cents more. Crazy system. My orders already gone to shipping so I might wait until next pay before I add these to the collection.

I revisited Billy Wilder's Double Indemnity earlier this evening by way of the old DVD. It's funny how, when you see a movie enough times, it feels almost as though you're hanging out with old friends each time you return to it.

Criterion (or somebody) needs to make the Blu-ray happen on these shores. There are only a few reasons right now for me to get a region free Blu-ray player (Double Indemnity, The Lost Weekend, Touch of Evil, Gun Crazy, Sullivan's Travels, Night of the Demon/Curse of the Demon), but I'd rather be spared the trouble and expense simply by seeing these movies released over here.

Does anyone have any links to any good articles on Sedmikrásky (Daisies)? I just finished it and I'm sort of at a loss for words.

I have just now started digging into Japanese cinema and, most specifically, Imamura's work. This one wasn't on my radar but it sounds fascinating.

(Oh, look, he's putting extras on the BJM disk...And they're all pointless extras, to satirize DVD-extra fans! That's so cutting-edge! Oh, look, a computer user is in love with his computer, because he's too isolated from the world around him...What a sensitive metaphoric character portrayal!)
And I'll assume the "It's all such artifice to him, he can't even direct them under his own name" thing was just a bit of vanity from his music-video days.

Expecting "warmth" from a Jonze film is like expecting sweetness from a Coen Bros. film.
Oh, there is never any warmth in a Jonze film. But I think this movie has a story that is very plausible and ranks up high in science fiction. I believe its a hipster-techno future of operating system romance and mass introversion combined with heightened sensitivity. Phoenix's character falls in love with artificial intelligence, not a computer. This sort of behavior will most likely happen in the future I think.

As my friend described: "It was like a full-blown phenomenological immersion into someone else's love relationship, amazingly realistic. It was like a transcendental experience with higher forms of emotional consciousness (the human - OS synthesis), and its very beautiful in many ways actually."

Criterion should just have a grab bag of Sony Pictures Classics' 1990s catalog.
In the Company of Men
Living in Oblivion
SLC Punk!
These are just some of the great titles that could be.

Hell, throw in Spider too. Never can have enough Cronenberg.

Spent 5 hours working on this from scratch... I'm going to buy a case and print it out and put it in... don't like the plain blu-ray case it came with.
Hope you guys like.

I think there is a lot of warmth in 'Her'. I'm not ashamed to admit I was completely swept up by the relationship and may have shed some tears toward the end.

I think it's the easy to say the film is making a comment on the isolation and reliance on technology today but I think it's more saying something about human relationships and the way people grow together and grow apart.

I think it's a film brimming with ideas and it had such a huge impact on me and I in no way consider myself a 'hipster' (Gosh I am sick of hearing this word).

P.S. I also think Where the Wild Things Are has an incredible amount of heart and warmth!

You can thank NASA for that picture of our home planet.

I initially was just going to use deep space galaxy with stars in the background and the text, but looking through google images I found that picture of Earth and it looked so great I had to put it on there.

On second thought, since it's a "Criterion" cover, I have to use art on the inside in addition to the outside... so let me go back and find a nice picture of deep space... and maybe have the spaceship floating.

just read that Alphaville has been restored and is being shown at NYC's film forum.
I guess Criterion lost the rights, but hopefully a bd is coming from some enity soon.

Well, if it's a StudioCanal, then the US rights are with Lionsgate, and they seem to have lost their zeal for releasing StudioCanal titles. They've only done seven over the course of the last two years, and the last one was almost exactly a year ago. One presumes that they just haven't sold well.

One can hope for a European Blu-ray, though.

Wish The Naked City would get a Blu-ray upgrade.

Not enough early 20th century police procedural and noir films on Blu.

Quick question: I bought the BD edition of Howards End shortly after it was announced it was going OOP and today it was the first time I opened to watch it but it won't play on my PS3 which is odd since all the rest of my Criterion titled have played there without any issue. Does someone know what might cause this? Thanks!

I met Mark and got my picture taken with him at Roger Ebert's film festival about 10 years or so ago. I could smell alcohol on him. I remember the brief convo I had with him:

me: "You're an inspiration"
Mark: "Man, YOU'RE an inspiration!" (said in that kind of stoner voice he has)

that movie really resonated with me. I have also got a signed and numbered VHS copy of Coven.
