I picked up the original Smooth Talk bluray on eBay for way too much money. Didn't realize it was posted on Janus recently. What are the odds it will be redistributed on blu in the near future?

Is Criterion ever going to make more of the Zatoichi sets?

I may have found some in your collection.

LPCM 2.0:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Leon-...Blu-ray/13527/
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Bound-Blu-ray/104511/

DTS 2.0:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Water...lu-ray/244490/

Try decoding those in Dolby Surround. I don't know if you'll have the option with Waterworld.

I just tested my American copy of Bound by Olive Films, which only has compressed Dolby Digital (AC3) 2.0, but it's definitely a surround soundtrack. The audio comes from the front, while the surrounds add to the music and sound effects. Oh hell, gonna rewatch the whole movie now.
I was under the impression that in those cases the 5.1 was the "correct" audio and the stereo was a downmix.

Didn't really search on the forum but the new remaster for Pierre Le Fou appears very nice, going by image comparisons. Honestly haven't seen this film in a very long time. Perhaps when I first had my Netflix account a bit over 17 years ago, DVD and NOT Streaming. Ought to re-add it to my queue and move it to the top. The movie and more of Godard's to rent.

The “New Remaster” is the exact same master as the old Optimum/StudioCanal digibook release. It’s a decent master in-motion but the film could use a fresh scan.

But how do you know whether it's stereo or surround, is my point. When is "the late 70s"? What movies constitute that 0.1%? Etc.
I use Dolby Surround on my Anthem AVR, and I've found that if I'm listening to 2.0 mono using DS, it will collapse the two channels into the center channel. It appears smart enough to recognize when the two channels are identical to make it a single channel.

If listening to genuine 2-channel stereo, it's not smart enough to know that's what it is and will upmix to all channels (5 in my setup) when using DS. Unfortunately, you'll have to do a bit of research to find out whether a movie is matrixed stereo. I usually go to IMDB and go to the technical specs to see if a movie is listed as "Dolby Stereo" or something like that. And it's not just restricted to the late 70s...that's when widespread use of it began (although some movies were still made in mono). It continues throughout the 80s and into the early to mid-90s. I think it's around then when discrete multichannel use (e.g. "Dolby Digital") started becoming commonplace. IMDB isn't always 100% correct, but it's close enough for my purposes. I generally will check for any movie released between 1976 to 1995 or so.

I agree that it's silly that one has to manually engage this mode to decode matrixed stereo and know when to do it, but that's unfortunately how it is. It would be so much better if the people responsible for the audio on discs would flag whether it's matrixed stereo so that the AVR would automatically decode it, but it appears the vast majority do not. I've only found a handful of cases where it does appear to be flagged because my AVR plays it in LCRS without my engaging Dolby Surround: the DTS-HD Master Audio 2.0 tracks on the 4K UHD discs for Glory, Deer Hunter (StudioCanal), and Die Hard.

Damn. Was tired so I forgot to choose the comparison with the Optimum/StudioCanal release. I should've known.

It was probably the first month in awhile that I was disappointed. Criterion overall had a pretty good 2020.

I do wonder what's in store for 2021. We know for sure that The Man Who Wasn't There and Parallax View, but I wonder what else.

Coffee and Cigarettes, Memories of Murder and a Wong Kar-wai set are all but confirmed, too. Hopefully we finally get After Hours and California Split in 2021.

Personally would rather have After Hours released by WAC on BD. But that's just me.
