Because I don’t. I think Paul Thomas Anderson would stomp all of them. My generation is NOT that good compared to Ramsay, Wes Anderson, Linklater, Coens, Lynch, Sofia Coppola, etc. Some of you need to calm down about Robert Eggers and the Safdies. PTA would kill them.
I mean, at the same points in their careers? Eggers is absolutely having a better career than Coppola’s first five pictures, including The Rain People and Finian’s Rainbow. Ari Aster has had two terrific films compared to Scorsese’s 1 out of 2. Barry Jenkins is hitting out of the damn park, and Peele is 2 for 2. Villenueve’s work is stunning.

But career-wise? It’s impossible to make those kind of comparisons. But, you know, if you wanna go down that route, Scorsese is an enormous fan and champion of Ari Aster. Spielberg is a fan of Gerwig. So, you know, take that as you will. I always pay attention when an old master does.

High Sierra is a 2-BD set? Those extras must be voluminous.

Thinking more on Onibaba's specs, in terms of age of master at Blu-ray release date (estimated based on DVD release date), I believe it's the oldest by over three years. (DVD release: March 16, 2004; Blu-ray release: October 5, 2021: 6412 days.)

The next oldest, all with Blu-rays released within the last three years:
  • Scenes from a Marriage (5285 days)
  • Symbiopsychotaxiplasm: Two Takes (5117 days)
  • An Angel at My Table (5068 days)
  • The Furies (4683 days)
  • 4 by Agnės Varda (to The Complete Films of Agnès Varda) (4585 days)

In general the release of Criterion Blu-rays from existing Criterion DVD masters has picked up slightly in the last three years after peaking in 2011 and trailing off starting in 2015.

After making the determination that the cost of a new restoration and/or the conditions of existing materials are prohibitive, I wonder how they decide whether/when to release Blu-ray editions.

Voluminous enough for you?

Thank God it's a two disc release. It includes a second movie and a lot of extras, coupled with the fact that Criterion are hit or miss with their encoding, it could have been a compression nightmare.

Since i have the previous AK criterion box (the dvd one, i don't know if I would double dip on a blu ray box, since i have all the AK blu rays that criterion put out.

I would love a Bollywood set or as I mentioned previous even another Demy set

If there’s a Criterion & A24 relationship and this isn’t a one off. Then I would love a new release of Under the Silver Lake (specifically if they could include The Myth of the American Sleepover) and possibly a double feature of The Souvenir I & II!

But not everyone relates to a rich businessman, etc. Basically, most people judge movies based on emotions and themes. Vertigo stirs my emotions; Kane does not. Both masterpieces, though.
Nolan fans usually call it "overrated" because it's not Dark Knight. Trust me. I used to frequent the IMDb boards.

Finally, Onibaba on Blu-ray and I'm glad that The Incredible Shrinking Man is getting a Blu-ray release (It can explain why Arrow was unable to release it in the US). I'm still hoping for Jigoku to get release on Blu-ray.

Any actors you're surprised aren't in a movie that's in the collection?

Saint Maud. Largely because COVID absolutely botched its US release.

I was mostly focusing on past releases that they could improve. I wouldn’t mind a Zola release, if they include Janicza Bravo’s shorts that are on the Criterion Channel!

Peele and Jenkins are young Gen Xers. Anyway I just spent too much time going through They Shoot Pictures Don’t They list of the greatest films of the 21st century, and the closest Millennial movies are La La Land (#144) and Lady Bird (#140). Yeah…that looks promising. Maybe they’ll crack the top 100 within a decade.

Interested in High Sierra and The Incredible Shrinking Man the most, had almost pulled the trigger on buying the arrow release of the latter, will hold off until this one releases to get a good comparison! Always interested in Criterion releasing more Classic Hollywood films, still holding out hope for that Winchester '73 release. Any month now .

Oh come on - Greta Gerwig is like three years younger than Jenkins and Chantelle is like four. We’re talking about this generation of filmmakers who are all at about the same level of feature filmmaking. If you’re going to make this about age, please drop Coppola from his associated group of contemporaries, as he was about a decade older than all his contemporaries and was on his fifth or sixth film by the time Spielberg and Scorsese got to their features.

I also went down that list, but any list that omits, like, highly acclaimed *best picture winners* Moonlight and Nomadland but has Iron Man on there, well, I’d hesitate using that as any barometer of excellence.

Not bad for an allegedly DOA format.
Compared to DVD, everything since is a failure. I'm sure the format war didn't help. But even though Blu-Ray has been around for almost 15 years, many people have not deliberately bought a Blu-Ray player (came with game machine). And even if they have, they still rent and buy DVDs. We don't have exact numbers, but I would not be surprised in the least if Criterion's number one selling format, by volume, is DVD. And even if it's not first, it's a close second.

Does Criterion really want to have to produce three formats? I don't think so. But they can't get rid of DVD or Blu-Ray. So if they add UHD they'll have no choice but to offer all three. Or try the combo scheme again, which utterly failed the last time.
