I've never gone into a comic book thread and talked about hating them. But I've always had to deal with the haters of art house in the art house threads.

I guess I just don't usually bother with things I don't like. I don't feel the need to go among the fans of said movies and talk about hating them. I simply avoid it all.

But if I had a nickel for every guy with a super hero avatar talking about the 'pretentious, boring, senseless' movies I've loved, I'd be very rich.

Yet some filmmaker says he doesn't like those super hero things and they LOSE THEIR MINDS about it.

Mind you, I'm not talking only of this specific poster in this thread, they just put me in mind of this.

Criterion is predominantly an art house label. Why bother with it, then?

Yeah I know, I was just kidding around about you saying “comic book thread” to mean threads for movies based on them. I’m with you on it though, as a lover of art film, comic art, and case-by-case sometimes-enjoyer of cape movies.

Now I’m reminded that Alain Resnais was friends with Stan Lee and they were gonna make a movie together if they only got the money for it. That would’ve been something to see.

I don't find arthouse movies pretentious, boring, or senseless, necessarily, but if someone does, that's fine. As long as they don't insult those who like them, and as long as those who like them are thick-skinned enough to understand that ya can call a movie pretentious without calling anyone who likes that movie pretentious. Not having any go at you here, just making a general statement. I think what can piss off comic book movie fans sometimes is when some actor or director not only says they don't like comic book movies, which is fine, but also says, or at least implies, that anyone who does like them is dumb.

I have 66 Criterion titles, not exactly a trivial investment in the label, though quite far from super-fans of the label. I've only said I don't like art house. That's a far cry from denigrating art house or its fans.

Criterion releases a lot of stuff that would not be considered art house. Saying that you like certain things they put out and dislike others is not analogous to trashing it.

Exactly. Ya can not like a movie without not liking those who like the movie.

Dig em up... I want Tarkovsky's Batman and Fellini's Spiderman. Bergman can get Wolverine or something

I don’t recall any actors or directors just calling fans of cape movies dumb, but even if it did they get just as mad even after said directors write eloquent, well thought-out expansions of the initial take like Scorsese did in NYT. It’s all knee-jerk anti-intellectual nonsense.

Fellini loved Windsor McCay strips, there’s some Little Nemo in 8 1/2.

And more than most of the people commenting, including myself. But that's how things work around here. They don't appeal to reason, they appeal to emotion.

However, I do wish that people would stop using the term "art house" when it's clear they don't know what it means. Just because something isn't mainstream doesn't mean it's "art house." There's nothing art house about Criterion's last month of releases, with maybe the exception of Adoption (which I haven't seen) and Walker (which is just bad).

Yeah, we used to get a lot of personal attacks, particularly in the old imdb boards days (one of the reasons they finally shut them down, was all the fighting and reporting that went on).

I always found it ironic when the posters would step into, say, a "The Tree of Life" board, and not only call the film itself senseless and boring and pretentious, but would attack its admirers by saying that there was no way that ANYONE could possibly like or be entertained by this pretentious film, or make any sense of it. No, the admirers of the film were simply acting pretentious, and pretending to like the film and understand it, to appear smarter than the average Joe. So, because these posters didn't like it or understand it, it must therefore be impossible for ANYONE to. The irony of a person with that mindset using the term 'pretentious'.... And, those same posters would call anyone a moron that didn't think "The Dark Knight" was the greatest movie of all time in those days.

I just had a personal attack in a FB movie group thread a few days ago, where I recommended some Abel Ferrara film to someone, and two completely other guys came and started telling me how 'sh***y' my taste was. They told the other poster not to listen to me, because I have 's**t taste' in movies, LOL.

Ugh, LOL. I'm just likely extra sensitive to it, right now, pfft....

Again, I'm not attacking the posters in this thread.

What’s a classic? Is it film noir if it isn’t from the Noir region? You hate art house but you own The Last Temptation Of Christ? Labels are rarely helpful. Now do music.
