https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Blood...lu-ray/207453/ I'd take all of those you suggested, but especially Goyokin as well Hitokiri (Shintaro Katsu's best performance). Goyokin is a long favorite and I love the snow setting and the overall story is simply epic. I love the final duel in that as well between Tatsuya Nakadai and Tetsuro Tamba. |

I watched this Criterion Christmas noir last night and thought some of you might be interested.
Blast of Silence (1961) - ![]() ![]() ![]() With an unusual second-person narration, unique behind-the-wheel camera shots, and a memorable opening scene that takes the viewer from the womb to a moving train, Blast of Silence immediately distinguishes itself from the pack. This 1961 film noir is meticulous, methodical, sparse, and surprisingly nasty and gruesome as it depicts a few days in the life of a contract killer hired to execute a hit the week of Christmas. The details of the main character's job are occasionally a bit too monotonous, but that level of painstaking precision is also what makes this different and special. The shooting budget was a minuscule $20,000, but you'd never be able to tell, because the streets of New York look gorgeous at Christmastime. Blast of Silence is one of the relatively small number of movies that can be classified as "Christmas noir." (I also highly recommend 1949's Cover Up.) The beginning and the end serve as nice bookends, and while the final outcome is never really in doubt, what really matters is the journey of getting there. ![]() Note: Blast of Silence is available on DVD (no Blu-ray) from The Criterion Collection or on the TCM app (with a cable login) until December 31st. |

I would love to see a blu-ray release of The Actuality Dramas of Allan King. At least one masterpiece in there.

Noir is probably a stronger word than I'd use, but it is a tight little crime caper. Lovely movie, with wonderful turns from Peter Cushing and Andrew Morell (the latter relishing the rare chance to dominate over Cushing).

Just finished watching The Rocking Horse Winner on TCM. An absolutely wonderful but heartbreaking film. I’ve seen it many times over the years but it perplexes me with its Criterion/Janus Films intro: As far as I can tell it’s never been a release from them. Not even Laserdisc. I certainly would welcome it and the print on TCM looked pretty good. I wonder if this is one they’ve gotten the rights to but haven’t done anything with yet.

(And what's fun about the behind the scenes on that one, is how jovial and funny everyone was actually being in real life, behind the scenes; at one point even PPP is telling them, 'Be serious." ) |

Hello everyone, Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukah, and Happy Holidays everyone. Hope you all are having or have had a great one. I am curious, does anyone here think that Criterion will ever get around to releasing Victor Sjöström's Terje Vigen (1917) and/or Berg-Ejvind och hans hustru (1917/1918). I'm curious because both films were digitally restored by the Svenska Filminstitutet and Svensk Filmindustri and I was always curious if Criterion would ever release the two films on Blu-ray.
I would also love to see Carl Th. Dreyer's Prästänkan (1920), also digitally restored by the Svenska Filminstitutet and Svensk Filmindustri, I'd also say it's one of his better works from the 1920s but I have my doubts with that one. |

Criterion has some kind of relationship with Svensk Filmindustri more than the Danish Film Industry, which has been holding onto a handful of Dreyer's major works like the three in the OOP boxset that Criterion did years ago. Criterion seems to hold onto the streaming rights and the three films still open with the Criterion/Janus logos but doesn't seem to garner any interest by them. I also heard that they did have restorations for this film done long ago and that Day of Wrath had a 65th anniversary theatrical run by Janus Films back in 2008 (?). The ones in the boxset have been given a 2K restoration at least (Although I've been hearing that Ordet was restored in 4K without any evidence to back that rumor). |
