I wonder if I will need a note from my Mom saying it's ok for me to pick up SALO like I used to need at the weekly Bookmobile visit when I was a kid in the 60's and I wanted to check out an Ian Fleming Bond novel.

Probably not yet. I don't think Kramer and Newman have worked out the math for it.

I didn't go crazy with Criterions 4K sale but I did pick up a couple titles.

I'm sure sooner or later we will see most Criterion Blus get upgraded to 4K, same as they did for Blu, so all the long waits for announcements and releases have accomplished is possibly preventing eventual double dipping, which ain't bad! Actually, that's the best, most worthy advantage of sitting on titles and getting the first release done right AS IS. So I guess I can't debate the point too much since I wish KINO had been practicing the same philosophy instead of rushing releases out too soon and now cluttering the waters with "improved" re-releases.
Do you actually think *most* Criterion blu-rays will be upgraded to UHD eventually? I’m skeptical, considering the more niche market and the higher production costs for a UHD release, so I definitely think there’s a plateau of sorts. I don’t expect most of the WCP titles, the Czech New Wave films, and stuff like Muriel, Les Rendez-Vous d’Anna, and Every Man for Himself to ever make it to UHD as an example, but who knows. I don’t think a “long march through the Criterion back catalog” was ever really in the cards for the 4K format like it was for Blu-ray.

On a more biased note, I also just don’t think UHD for a lot of these “deep catalog arthouse” titles is even necessary. It’s a miracle they’re on Blu-ray to begin with.

Over time, 1080p Blu-ray releases became relatively cheap to produce, which was allowed a lot of these niche arthouse titles to make it to the format. That hasn’t really happened with UHD…yet.

Do any of you know of any reasons why 'Y tu mamá también' wouldn't receive a 4K upgrade ?

This is one I would like to see get upgraded. But if there's some reason why it is strongly unlikely, I'll probably just go in for the blu-ray soon.

I would make that a First Day Buy!!

Also, when are they coming out with more Kurosawa? Stray Dog, The Bad Sleep Well, Drunken Angel, even a Red Beard upgrade would all be First Day Buys!! Where are we at, Criterion?

So, this is interesting. Criterion will be releasing Godzilla on 4K in the UK as well, but they will also be getting a separate Blu-ray. And not only will it come in a plastic case, it's stated to be sourced from the new 4K restoration. Criterion aren't re-releasing a standalone BD in the US, and their M.O. has usually been to include the old BD with their 4K releases, so that UK BD may be the only way to get the 4K restoration on Blu-ray from Criterion.

More Kurosawa stuff is definitely coming next year, or we could see a couple of Kurosawa new to Blu-Ray titles in December I doubt it as I’m leaning towards a Simple Plan being put out from Criterion just like with Paper Moon in November. However, I would love to be wrong on the new to Blu-Ray Kurosawa stuff not coming out till next year as December would be great. I’m not going to lie all those Kurosawa titles would be first day buys for me too as I also want all four of those titles too so bad.

I don't disagree with any of this and was really only applying a broad, general statement about Criterion upgrading everything as a ballpark possibility should 4K continue to stretch its appeal. I'm not sure Criterion would ever jump on the Limited Edition, useless swag deluxe editions that are keeping some labels afloat right now, but I wouldn't rule it out either. Of course, you are right that much of their lesser output will never see 4K, but I'm pretty sure a lot of their Blu titles will. Once labels and retailers see that customers will submit to double and triple dipping, they are not shy about shoving them in that direction.

Could TOHO have different limitations imposed on UK releases than the USA?

That could be a mistake in the listing. Some that is successful in getting replies from Criterion should email and ask.

If it's a mistake, that would be such a lame move to release the movie individually on BD in the UK the same day as the 4K, and it turns out to be the old dated transfer. I might reach out to Criterion to see if I could get any confirmation on whether the included BD with the US 4K is a new disc, and also about that UK BD.

I feel pretty sure that they just wouldn’t go the LE route - they seem to always favor more sustainable, library-friendly output.

My other thought on 4k is whether the Criterion Channel will ever go 4k. And if it does, will it get 4k editions where it didn’t make financial sense to press an UHD edition but there is a 4k master available?

Huh. Quite odd. Does Criterion have a history of doing anything similar?

They’re probably afraid going 4K digitally whether via the Channel or online rentals and purchases will eat into their UHD sales too much.
