I def don't want to make a habit of endlessly upgrading to UHD because that would just become a dog chasing its tail, but Paris, Texas is like a top 5 film for me so that is absolutely going to happen.

I like to presume there’s a plateau with respect to the number of “art films” that are Criterion’s bread and butter that will actually make it to 4K. I’ll admit I got into UHD under the assumption only a manageable number of titles would make it to the format anyway. Welp!

With this thread being 11,300 pages, I hope no one will hold it against me if this has been brought up before, but am I the only one that absolutely hates the non-standard Blu-ray cases that Criterion uses for some of their releases? It drives me absolutely insane when I get this overly expensive release and it comes in a cardboard box that is so fragile and easily damaged that it only makes the high price point feel more insulting. I don't have a ton of Criterion movies, but the ones that come to mind are their Scanners and Police Story 1+2 releases. The print quality on the boxes are excellent, I won't complain about that, but it just seems like unless you can keep them in an ultra dry environment (which is not easy in my area), they are just asking for the cases to wither within a few years of purchase. Just put the movies in plastic cases!

The 4K will be the fourth time buying the film (DVD, Blu-ray, and the Fellini set)

I have never seen 8 1/2 for some reason so I will buy the 4K UHD. I don't think I ever finished No Country For Old Men, I might get it, too.

If I could make Criterion upgrade a single release, it would be this: . None of the included films have Blu-rays, and those kinds of movies are just so fun. Make it happen, Criterion!

If you scroll back it won't take you long to find that this definitely a topic that inspires strong feelings. I happen to like the digipaks and think they look nice. I've noticed that folks who move a lot (requiring numerous packing/unpacking of the sets) or who have a strong need for uniformity on their shelves tend to hate them.

Last week I watched The Atomic Submarine for the first time in years and it was just as cheesy and fun as I had fondly remembered it being.

I've started watching a lot more 50s SF than is good for me —or my budget— and both Fiend Without a Face and Atomic Submarine sound like a lot of fun. But I can hardly bring myself to buy *gasp* DVDs now that I have a 4K setup. Earlier this year, maybe, but not now.

Third time for me. Well second technically, since I was actually gifted the 2010 Blu-ray(back in the early 2010s) and bought the Essential Fellini set myself.

8 1/2 is probably the only thing I’ll pick up here. NCFOM I’m sure will get a Euro UHD at some point, and considering it’s Paramount, I like its chances of getting digitally upgraded to 4K sooner rather than later. If I ever do get Paris, Texas, which I’ve never owned physically, I’ll probably get one of the Euro releases. I’ve never seen Eastern Condors, so I’d need to watch it first.

Fiend Without a Face is indeed a fun time with some of the most unique title critters ever (un)seen. I first saw it on tv sometime in the ‘60s and it had a surprising amount of
[Show spoiler]gooey gore
from that era. I still buy DVDs on Criterion titles that I suspect won’t be upgraded and my buying them hasn’t changed that status one iota. Buy it and enjoy!

I’ve reached the point where I just ask myself “Would I still feel the need to physically own this in 4K if I could access it digitally in 4K HDR whether via Criterion Channel, Mubi, etc. or a digital rental on iTunes?” If the answer is no, I won’t buy. North by Northwest I’m going to want physically no matter what, so that’s a non-negotiable preorder, but while I like Paris, Texas and Wings of Desire enough I’d feel no need to own a physical copy of either if I could easily rent them digitally in 4K HDR when the mood really strikes.

Then again, I live in the Paris area, so I can’t buy 4Ks like a drunken sailor, so North by Northwest and 8 1/2, yes! But The Long Good Friday, Peeping Tom, and anything by Wenders? Either I’ll settle for a digital 4K purchase or pick one of them during an otherwise dry spell in my disc buying.

When the next 50% sale hits, I’ll go after it, then. Thanks for the advice!
