Several Criterion titles have a coupon discount on my account, which brings them down to great prices. These coupons are targeted, so many will not see them. Prices below are after discount. Others may have coupons an completely different titles. Another member pointed out that Summertime has a coupon for them for instance, but that one isn't on my account.

The Criterion Closet is actually a great place to look beyond the surface level of these individuals. I'd expect more from someone who routinely visits this thread. |

Kevin Smith Closet video: This guy deserves accolades for praising Slacker. That is one of the most unique films of its kind. I always get a thrill screening this for friends of mine who've never seen it just to see what their reaction is after the movie is over. Hell yeah.
Francis Ford Coppola Closet video: I just needed to say I thoroughly enjoyed watching this gracious and humble man talk about cinema. The man is simply a legend and one of my all-time favorite filmmakers. Not only that, but Rumble Fish is also one of my favorite arthouse films. I had no idea that Coppola had intended this to be a children's film, but ironically in college I chose this film as my semester thesis in one of my final film classes before I obtained my Bachelors Degree in Film Studies. I remember renting a viewer in the library and analyzing this film on DVD as I wrote down questions I wanted to ask in my essay. I still have the piece here on my computer and the title was "The Resolution of Rumble Fish." Here is my opening paragraph in my essay: In Francis Ford Coppola’s Rumble Fish, two brothers, Rusty James and the Motorcycle Boy, are cast in an unrealistic world where authority shifts between both characters in the film. According to Jon Lewis, the “functional hero is the dominant structure of authority in narrative”. Yet, in this film there is no true male hero or authority, because neither Rusty James, the Motorcycle Boy, and police officer Patterson, are able to control authority through time itself. Just like their imaginary world, the nonexistence of linear time prevents these characters from grasping any long term qualities of superiority. In the film, clocks on walls speed up, clouds in the sky race against time, and day turns to night in a matter of seconds. Yet, despite the instability of leadership amongst these characters, it is the socially incompatible Motorcycle Boy, the anti-hero, who is labeled as the reigning authority in the society depicted through the film. In my analysis of Rumble Fish, through Lewis’s comments, along with specific sequences from the film, I will reveal how authority exists and shifts between the human beings portrayed in this story. Juliette Binoche and Ralph Fiennes Closet video: Fiennes had me at "Do you think it's greedy of me if I took this?" with the Fellini box set. Charming! Binoche was lovely as always, looking in hard to reach places. The whole video resembled a scene in a film almost. And then I thought at the very end they'd give each other a kiss! I like the idea of having two people in the closet at the same time.
Because I imagine if I was in the closet by myself, it wouldn't come off well because all the Criterion films I've seen and could speak to I already own. So I would be picking movies based on reputation but are blind-buys and really couldn't explain why the movie is great. But if I had someone with me saying "Have you seen this? This is why it's great" it comes off better, two people recommending movies to each other. |

I love hearing people talking about their favorite films, be it a celebrity or some rando I run into on the street. Everybody's got their own experience with a movie and to hear someone talk about what made them fall in love with it, it's invaluable.
These videos might just be the press junket but the guests seem to have fun visiting the closet and reminiscing about their favorites. |

As much as I miss the annual Criterion cartoon that comes out with the New Years clues (from the late artist Jason Polan), I do welcome the Criterion Closet videos.
Here's a little 2 min. video I found on Polan in remembering him. |

Yeah, he died on January 27, 2020 from cancer. He was just 37 years old. I had reached out to Criterion at the time to inquire about a book collecting his work, and they said they had been working on a project for some time, but perhaps due to the pandemic it had to be halted or delayed.

Watched The Room Next Door the other day, so I’m once again asking Criterion for some more Pedro Almodóvar movies!

I shared this in the Jackie Chan thread before but figured it might get more eyes here…
Not sure if anyone else experienced this but, I just viewed Fearless Hyena II with the classic English dubbed track and noticed something under the mix. At first, I thought it was my sound bar crackling for some odd reason but, as I got closer and played things back, it became very clear that I was hearing a completely different soundtrack, albeit softly, under the actual one. Not sure if it's the commentary from Part 1 that somehow got interlaced with this mix but, it was definitely someone speaking at times and I even noticed music at other moments (which could very well be from the film but just again be crossed from another track on the disc). If anyone else noticed this, I'd be curious to know. Thanks in advance! |

Pretty sure this is old news, but Radiance has a Blu-ray of The Exterminating Angel, Viridiana, and Simon Of The Desert.
