Yeah, I was really hoping for a major new to Blu-ray WB-licensed title in this slate. Especially something like Captain Blood.

I know you’re *personally* disappointed - which is fine! - but it seems just contrarian to not see that this is an absolute murderer’s row of their backbone titles. Only Grand Illusion would’ve made it more perfect in that respect.

(I’m not saying it’s the best month ever - just that, in terms of what Criterion was known for, this is kind of the apotheosis of that.)

I know we were all anticipating Flow, but I get it. They’ve shifted it from Janus Contemporaries to a full Criterion release. They’re having to assemble a whole different package (or, if they were working on a follow-up full release for the collection, maintaining their original production schedule). In either case, clearly, the extras aren’t remotely done.
It’s a great selection Mike Nichols, Kubrick, and Lang all in the same month is absolutely insane. I’m not disappointed at all honestly despite the lack of Flow, Brother From Another Planet, Captain Blood, and Hud. This is an amazing selection even if it’s only 5 titles plus a box set.

The announcement really have to come out right after I just pre ordered Carnal Knowledge from Indicator, does it.
No big problem then since that set will probably have the same extras and the quality is probably the same between releases

Edit: I just checked, this release might have more extras than the Indicator release

But if they're all masterpieces or something, maybe it's worth it.
All very different films - The 400 Blows is poster-child French New Wave, Antoine & Colette is a bitter-sweet romantic short, Stolen Kisses (my favourite of the lot) is a light rom-com with slapstick comedy elements, Bed & Board is a romantic/relationship drama and Love On The Run (the weakest in my opinion) is a rather dreary divorce drama.

They could feasibly all be completely unrelated films were it not for Antoine Doinel being in them.

Haven't said this is months, but this is a GREAT month for me.

Been waiting for You Can Count on Me for ages. Dreadful cover, though. Looks like something I could make.

I think it may depend on its reception out of competition at Cannes. If it gets some heat, they may slot it later for Oscar competition.

I knew waiting for an Antoine Doinel set instead of getting solo 400 Blows would pay off!

Also stoked for Big Heat and Carnal Knowledge and You Can Count on Me (which is super underrated).

I hope Criterion is also working on Kenneth Lonergan's Margaret.

I love them all, although the final one has too many clips of the previous instalments.

400 Blows is slightly apart from the rest, though, as Antoine is an amoral delinquent in it while in the rest he’s more of a nice young man who drifts through various jobs, chases girls, and gets into mishaps.

The Indicator will likely be encoded by FiM for what it’s worth, but unless you’re really set on certain CC exclusive extras…

From what I remember, the 4K remasters of the Doinel films were considered problematic, which is why BFI chose to only release The 400 Blows on blu-ray, so we’ll see how this turns out in the end.

If it has the same issues as Carlotta’s release I may settle for the iTunes 4K versions.

Man, any month with the Big Heat can't be disappointing. It's one of the all time great! It's a kickass cover too!
Time to sell my Indicator blu ray. :P

The July titles:

I'm kind of amazed The Big Heat wasn't already in the collection! One of the best quintessential film noirs of its kind.

Carnal Knowledge. Here's one I kind of forgot about. I want to see this again just for Art Garfunkel's performance alone. Weirdly enough, this film was banned in a small town in the US state of Georgia due to "lewdness" under the 1973 Supreme Court obscenity ruling.

A 4k upgrade of Barry Lyndon is wonderful, and I just noticed the film is playing in a special 50th anniversary screening at the IFC Center in NYC starting this Friday, the 18th.

I haven't seen You Can Count on Me or All We Imagine as Light, but those are ones I'd like to check out.

Last but not least, this is a fantastic 4k upgrade of The Adventures of Antoine Doinel, and for Truffaut fans, it's a revelatory box set.

Delighted to see another Mike Nichols LD release that skipped Criterion DVD/BD land back in the collection. (The cover is a serious upgrade over the intensely unimaginative LD cover.)

I don't see Bruce Eder's original back cover essay listed as an extra, but happy that Criterion has preserved it on their site:

THE BIG HEAT and BARRY LYNDON in 4K and genuinely appealing cover art strikes me as an "impressive month." And THE 400 BLOWS is a movie that for me never gets old. It takes me right back to high school and the local public television station in Chicago airing it for my discovery. Now I'm happy I never bought any other release of it.

I may hang onto my Indicator in addition to the Criterion for the original poster art and the great booklet!

Better month for me personally than June, but I do agree that it seems like a step down rather than a step up in what is usually a bigger month.
